Stereo Help Please
I purchased a HIFONICS 1206DI model from Sone Electronix a while back to hook up to my two 10" Alpine Type R's. Well neeless to say I am not impressed with the amp!
This amp is a Mono amp running in 1 ohm load, but I find it hard to believe it is with so little punch. Looking at the specs the Aplines should hit really hard. However the subs can't hit the low notes at all, if you now the song (I"m Sprung by T. Pain) then you know what I mean. THe bass seems a little hollow sometimes but can't figure that out either. There are some notes that are clean but for the most part it sounds like shiat to me.
I am wondering if I should replace the Mono Hifonics amp running Parallel at 1 ohm, and just go with a Two Channel amp and be done with it. The hifonis amp has so many different amp settings that it really hard to set.
I have included the link to the amp so you can see for yourself if reference to the settings.
I would like some professional opinions here, so if you are able tp help me out, please do. The sub box I made is perfecly Square, 35Lx 12.5W x 8H.
Please let me know where I should start from this point.

Julius
I would like to pull the speakers out and check to see if they are hooked up at a 1ohm load. I am thinking the stereo shop might have hooked it up 4 ohms x 1 at 450 Watts. If any one can tell me how I can hook up two
Dual 4 ohms subs at 1 ohm or 2ohms or 4 ohms, I would appreciate it greatly.

2 subs, both have dual 4 ohm voice coils:
1 ohm: each sub wired in parrellel, and then the 2 subs wired in parrellel
4 ohm: each sub wired in parrellel, and then the 2 subs wired in series
4 ohm (2nd option): each sub wired in series, and then the 2 subs wired in parrellel
Don't think there's a way to get a total 2 ohm resistance from combining those 2 subs...

from experience i can tell you that the hifonics amp is not bad, is it the best? no, but it will put out relatively close to relate power and sound decent while doing it...
there is no other way to say it, if you are not happy wtih the sound, and it seems like you used good equipment, it comes down to:
1. enclosure not properly built: i.e. what material did you use, thickness? did you seal it well? push down on both cones at the same time, can you hear an air leak? is the enclosure too big? etc etc
2. improper tuning: wahts the crossver setting at? is the bass boost on? etc etc
and to answer your question on how to hook up two dual 4ohm subs to 1ohm load do this:
since each sub has two voice coils, the two subs have four voice coils, and this FOUR sets of positive and negative terminals.. what you need to do is hook ALL THE POSITIVE and ALL THE NEGATIVE terminals together...how you do this i dont care, but bascially, all the positive terminals have to be connected together with wiring and then pluged into the POSITIVE OUTPUT OF THE AMP, and ALL the negative terminals of the subs have to be connected together to the NEGATIVE OUTPUT of the amp... thats how you get 1ohm.
honestly, if bass donest sound good, the amp is uusally the last thing that matters (unless you get junk like pyramid or something), its usually the sub, or the install and tuning that makes bass sound good or bad

Spot on advice. Your exterior dimentions are 35Lx 12.5W x 8H but how thick is the wood? What is the internal volume in cubic inches? I'll guess that you used 5/8th thick wood, that everything is sealed dead nutz 100% tight and run the math for you. Back in a bit.
OK it looks like your box is about 1.95 cu.ft
Page two and three of your Type R owner's manual has pictures on how to connect every possible subwoofer impedance to every possible amplifier load. Nice effort by Alpine.
Page four of your owner's manual has specifications with recommended cabinet volumes.
It looks like you get a Qtc of a perfect 0.7 with 1.90 cubic feet worth of enclosure volume. This is as smooth and as accurate as you can make these speakers sound. You'll get the lowest possible -3 dB frequency point of 44 Hz. I'm willing to bet you want the subwoofer to distort the artist/producer's bass as much as possible with a huge boost of amplitude so try shrinking that box as small as possible - down to 0.2 (1/10th the size of your current box) will give you a Qtc of 1.5 which will give you a four or five dB boost with a loss of some of the lower frequencies.
Here's the work I did on my woofers - take a look at the slopes in the lower diagram for plotted Qtc responses.

I use 3/4 inch MDF wood. I assume this is really good wood. So, in short should I just buy a TC Custom box or a Zenclosure.
I have tried to set all the setting on the amp, but it is lack lacking the knock punch I was expecting. Maybe this is becuase I had a 12 MB Quartz Sub in my other car and it hit alot harder that these two tens.
I just assumed the Subs would execute a little more. There seems to be no gain, per say on the amp just the 9V to 0.2V.
Should I go bigger on the box or should I go smaller. I am at .72 per sub!

Where should I start?
if the box is built right, start at the tuning and wiring of the amp:
1. confirm you are wired correctly, and in phase so the subs aren working against each other...
2. low pass should be set at around 80hz, bass boost should be off, and go from there wtih the gains...
it doesnt make sense taht two type R 10s cant over power a single MBQ sub, even if the mbq is the higest line version...

I pulled the speakers out and checkded to see if the sub were wire correctly! on each sub positive is wired to positive and negative is to negative.
Now should there be two wires running from each sub after the above mentioned?

two or simple combine the two input one pair, or bgetter yet, make wires that run from one set of positive to the other set of hte positive terminal on each sub...
doesnt matter how many wires you have, as long as every single positive and negative...terminal is connected to each other via wires somehow, its all good
