Okay people, I have been doing some mad research into the whole which is the best detector and I have heard many things, from many sources. Still not 100% sure... but I found this and fromt he stats shown, granted, their own stats, this seems to be the best. Definately the best for the money though.... only $244 and that includes 2 day shipping!

It's called the Phantom 4 or the RMR-C410
They even cover your tickets inside a year. They cover you 360 degrees plus the front 180 degrees is a jammer as well so they can't lock you before you slow down.
I can see a purchase down the road.... hmmm....
your thoughts?

More info on the detector, taken from another site that sells it for $228 + $15 for shipping. (http://www.radarscramblers.com/product_phantom.htm)
The RMR-C410 (Phantom 4) is top of the line in radar and laser detectors. It will visually and audibly notify you of police radar and laser guns attempting to read your vehicles speed. RMR-C410 also scrambles radar and laser signals from a police radar or laser gun returning a blocked signal, making it virtually impossible for police to read your vehicles speed.
RMR-C410's state-of-the-art radar and laser detector will cover your vehicle a full 360° while the radar & laser jamming portion will cover the front of your vehicle 180° for unbeatable protection. The RMR-C410 is a passive device and completely legal in all 50 states except California, Nebraska, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Virginia and Washington D.C (certain restrictions may apply in certain states – check with your local authorities).
We are so confident in RMR-C410's effectiveness, we have included free with your purchase, a one year ticket rebate program which will pay any ticket you receive for one full year (some restrictions apply).
RMR-C410's (Phantom 4) scrambling device blocks police radar and laser, making it virtually impossible to detect your vehicle's speed. RMR-C410 detects X, K, Ka, Superwide, Instant-On, and the New POP radar.
It works 2 to 4 times faster than any other radar detector on the market and has the ability to scramble any signal it receives. Our jammers do not transmit radio frequencies. The radar portion is a receiver not a transmitter. *This is why our jammers are legal!
They have an FM chirp, a mixer, and a waveguide antenna for all radar bands the FCC allows the Police to use ( 8GHz - 38GHz ). The lidar ( laser ) portion transmits a specially modulated field of light from the vehicle with infrared diodes that cover all three laser guns in use today. The radar and lidar portions of our jammers confuse the radar and laser guns which prevent a hard reading of your speed.
This makes your vehicle electronically invisible to police radar and laser guns. The radar jamming circuit mixes a Doppler FM chirp with the incoming police radar signal and reflects it back to the radar gun. The computer in the radar gun must receive eight identical, consecutive readings before it will display your speed.
All the different speeds contained in the FM chirp confuse the computer in the radar gun so it does not display any speed. This effect duplicates the normal operation that the officer usually sees. Since it is normal to occasionally lose the target speed, the officer is not suspicious. Reasonable care should be used as flagrant violators could still be caught visually with an estimated speed.

Passive jammers have been tested time and time again. They simply DO NOT WORK. I could tell you why in much detail, but the bottom line is that they don't work.
They attempt to collect radar energy from the small antenna and then send it back to scramble. The problem is that the little antenna collects a LOT less energy than the overall radar refelection of the car. There are other problems with the theory, but that is the main one.
Active jammers CAN work, but they are completely illegal and using one is a federal offense. (unlicensed transmitter, purposeful interference of a signal, etc.) They are also expensive.
Given the lies over the jamming aspects of this unit I would not put much faith in any of their other claims either. If this was a credible unit I think we would have seen it do well in a magazine test by now.
Now for my opinions on what to buy. (JUST opinions people, save the flames) If you want the best by the Valentine 1. If you want to save a some money and buy a unit that is nearly as good, check out the escorts.

Suck it up, and get a V1, like I did. Yeah, the price tag is steep, but this radar detector is the best you can buy right now...many others will agree, including DrBonz...I am sure.
I just got back from my first road trip...about 500 miles across the middle of Pennsylvania. It happened to be a weekend where alot of college students were returning from Spring Break. I passed Clarion, Grove City, Thiel, Penn State, and a few others on my drive from Harrisburg to Erie. On the way up, I found 6 cops, all Staties, hiding in their usual places in the median, and well hidden from view until you are almost on top of them. My V1 detected EVERYONE...without any problem. In fact, most of these gave me a warning almost 1 mile in advance--NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL DETECTION. My only problem came when I was all alone with no traffic for more than 1/2+ miles in front of me, and I came up on my 6th and final pig who was using Instant-On. He detected me, but I was only going 80 mph at the time, and he apparently decided to wait for bigger and better fish. I saw 3 more on my return trip home, and all were detected with plenty of notification. In fact, one of these was using Instant-On, and I was trailing about 1/4 of a mile behind other traffic, and I still got a notice--it was weaker, but I knew to slow down.
The bottom line is, if you want to spend your money wisely, get a V1. You will learn to trust it, and it is always right with all radar being detected. I have grown to love mine after only 1 road trip ! In my estimation, it has saved me 9 times now...and thats alot of tickets and a sh*tpile of money !

I bought a V1 for my birtday, last July. My wife thought that I was nuts to pay that much for a radar detector. I currently have it hardwired into the Z, but everytime my wife goes somewhere now she takes the V1. The cig. lighter power cord stays in her car. This radar detector is the best, in my opinion, that there is. Helped me this morning with a CHiP's cop, motorcycle monkey.
I LOVE my V-1. I have an older one in my Stealth and a brand new one in my Z. Like American Express.....I NEVER leave home without it!
Jay: Another nice thing about the V-1 is that they'll upgrade for you as newer versions come out. You simply send in the old one and they'll send you the new one at a dicounted price. Sort of like a "trade-up" program.

I remember way back, a few members mentioned they were considering getting one but never saw any final reports. I DO know that it is VERY expensive. $1200 seems to come to mind.
OK people - I am a 1st time detector buyer (illegal in UK where I came from but legal in NY where I now live - thank "F"). I was thinking of the Escort Solo 2 Cordless - a Passport 8500, cordless (so I could avoid tricky wiring) and with some new features. QUESTION - do detectors have to be fitted in windshield or (IF it fitted) would it work from my empty NAV box on the dash ?
This site has a fair amount of unbiased information on how it all works as well as product reviews.

This particular article should answer your question about the radar detector you are considering buying:

It has been awhile but if I remember correctly you will find there is a limit to the tickets that they will pay which still leaves them with a very nice profit on the detector
This is another good one:

Thanks Kevin - very useful reviews. Is anyone ablel to answer my question about if detectors have to be fitted in windshield or (IF it fitted) would it work from my empty NAV box on the dash ?
Well ... there is some info on that site about placement as well.
It really depends on what you want to use your detector for. If you are using it to detect laser then you need it to be mounted high in the vehicle in hopes of picking up the laser signal through the windows.
The laser is blocked by pretty much anything other than windows. If you are using it to detect radar then perhaps you could get away with placing the box inside the nav compartment.
I imagine radar will penetrate the plastic
So will probably want it mounted somewhere around the brace to get front and rear detection as well as some sembalance of stealth. It is also a convinient location to access the only power port in the car if you place it there
The big advantage of the V1 over the Passport is the rear detection range. For me, I do not really care if my detector can detect 2 miles back. I prefer to know what is coming not what I passed
The big advantage of the Passport:
1. Better detection cresting hills which is where I get all my tickets from ... I can generally eye ball traps if I can see the terrain before they hit me.
2. You can hook the Passport up to the laser jamming system also produced by escort.
Now ... if you are trying to hide your detector because of illegiality issues then I suggest you take a peek at a remote detection system:

Specifically the Sr-7 which you can then clip into the ZR3 laser shifter to jam laser.
Personally I will be getting the Passport 8500 and the ZR3 as soon as financially feasible.
I think they offer some extension devices at Escort as well so you could place a Passport 8500 in the front grill for example and patch it back to an extension device in your nav box.

I wish I could find the mirror etch installation that I ran across when I was researching this stuff. It was pretty nifty ... a V1 grill mounted and the mirror was etched and backed with the lighted display.

Thanks again. I read a little more before your last mail and see that it needs to be placed higher that the Nav box as you said. There appears to be much discussion on placement - some saying as high as possible others saying on top of the dash. I also like the Passport but was thinking of the Solo 2 (Passport with some new features and cordless to avoid the wiring needs).
Top of the dash will give you better front detection and worse rear detection.
I have seen the solo 2 but it rates poorer than the passport 8500 if I remember correctly and I am not certain it can be hooked up to the laser shifter.
Take a look into that before you make your decision
Oh ya, I forgot about the other advantage of V1 ... they supply directional info on detected radar/laser which is pretty nifty. Nice to know the direction the hit came from so you can disregard the alert.

Kevin

I've got 3 dectors sitting on the shelf due to massive false alarms with city driving, which redered the dectors useless as it made it appear I was always in a speed trap. The V1 seemed to rate low in false alarm detecting. For those of you that have one, what is your feedback on false alarm detection?
It isn't too bad as far as falsing but the 8500 is also pretty good at that as well. I just like the V-1 better for it's directional ability.
As far as putting it in the Nav compartment, I really don't think that would work at all. The higher up the better and it needs a clear view of the signal for the earliest detection.
