Debating sub upgrade
I have an Alpine Type-R 10 in a Zenclosure driven by a JL 5/500 amp which gives it 250wats rms. It sounds pretty decent but I am considering upgrading to a JL 10-W6-V2 in its place.
I am looking for a sound quality upgrade as well as maybe a little more output without adding power or added a second sub.
Would anyone think it would be a worthwhile upgrade, or just a waste of money.

Acoustically it's a good fit as the 0.75 cubic feet of the Zenclosure will give you a very honest Qtc of about 0.75 and an F3 of 43.1 Hz.
But the JL 10-W6-V2 needs a mounting depth of 6.9" which in my opinion isn't going to fit. I have Infinity Perfect 10 DVQ which have a mounting depth of 6.5" and had to put the rear magnet up against the cabinet - if the JL's woofer's magnet isn't as big as the Infinity's it might fit but I would bet it's not going to fit.
Secondly I'd guess that you're not looking for an honest sound and would rather get a bit of cabinet gain from a much higher Qtc like 1.4-1.5. If you're looking for crazy amounts of bass look at either a ported cabnet or building a band-pass one.
Here's my Infinity 10.1 resting against the back of the cabinet the 10 is a bit deeper even.

Perhaps you need to give the sub a little more power instead of just 250 watts RMS. I'm going to be running the same sub with an alpine amp that I believe puts out 400 watts RMS@4ohms. the type R can take up to 500 watts RMS. Just a thought.

The amp I have is teh JL Audio 5 channel Slash series amp. The subwoofer channel is 250 Watts RMS. This is all I have and I do not want to add another amp.
I want a sound quality upgrade, not necessarily more output.
Maybe I should look into using a pair of 8" subs or something.

don't take this wrong
you own a sub that you use every day
you do not even know the sound quality of it
because you are feeding it 250 watts
sub needs 500 watts
so if your stuck on JL and you want to only use 250 watts then buy a sub that has max rms of 250 then you will be feeding it properly and you should experience better sound quality
enclosures and subs is what takes the most amount of room in an install
IMO
choose what subs and enclosure you will install , then pick the proper amp
not buy an amp , and try to get a sub and box to work with it

You are absolutely right. I will take your advice.
I am going to pull the box out and sell it and and go with another Zenclosure that is punched for a pair of 8" subs. I will find a pair that will run optimally on 250watts RMS at 4 ohms.
I will see if I can find a pair of JL 8W-3 v2 subs.

i may have an answer read
that is 250 watts rms @ 4 ohms x1
this means you are planning on splitting 250 watts between 2 ,8" subs
that means your only giving the subs 125 watts each
again your underpowering
am i understanding that you have a 5 channel jl amp ?
are you running front stage only or rear fill as well ?
please answer so i can help you get this done so your happy

you can probably feed 500 rms of clean power
but i think he does not want to buy a new amp

What will that amp push at 2 ohms? Could get a 2 ohm sub and you'll prob be getting 500 watts from the amp, if it's stable at 2 ohms, which it should be. I thought the Alpine Type-R was a dual voice coil sub? If it's dual 4 ohm VC, wired properly, it'll draw from the amp at 2 ohms.

Why not just pick up a 10w3v3, which has an optimal RMS of 300w, the JL amp is likely slightly underrated so it probably puts out close to 300w already, and you don't have to go through the trouble of purchasing another box and 2 subs. IMO 1 10w3> 2 8w3s
