Default free air subwoofers?

I have enthusiast model and I want to put sub in the enclosure behind driver's seat. Is it true that I should be using free air subwoofers in that enclosure? What is the difference between free air sub and the other types of subs?

Thats what I heard/read in several threads around here.

Basically, most subs require an enclosure (box, "sealed") of specific dimensions to sound right. The space in the OEM place for the sub on the Z is open, not sealed. So you have two options,

- Build a box that fits in there, but you have to be carefull that it fits and it is the minimum size for your sub, or

- Use a "freeair" sub, which is designed NOT to require a box or enclusore around it.

I have been looking for JL Audio 10IB4 (10" is the OEM sub size).

Disclaimmer : I know NOTHING of what I am talking about. I just read this info in several threads and I am passing it along to save you the search. The above description is not an attempt to fully explain in detail this issues, it is just a "summary" of what I have learned/found out.

thanks for the info man. i am debating now if I should get free air sub or just use dinamyte to cover all the holes in stock enclosure. from doing my search it seems to me that JL and Kicker make free air subs. I also need to know is there stock amp in non-bose system? If there is one, where is it located?

There is no seperate amp in the non-bose systems. You could seal the entire enclosure with Dynomat, but unfortunately the volume is much larger than recommended size for any sub I know of...

I have 10" Pioneer free-air sub in the stock enclosure. It's powered by about 200 watts, and I dynamatted the panel. It sounds great, but you've got to get rid of the stock head unit. It is a POS.

I suppose a set up further back would sound better, but I'm very happy with mine.....I can crank it up so "really pounds" me...right in the back.

Well, I installed Rockford 10" sub in the space of stock Bose subwoofer and it rattles so bad. If I press on the metal part to which the subwoofer is attached, it stops rattling. What should be done to get rid of that rattle? Does the metal part remove? Would putting wood piece covered with cloth get rid of it? Or should I just get free air sub (if yes any recommendations for the free air sub)?

Well, I just recently put in an Infinity sub in the stock location and it rattled bad and sound was crappy. I bought a box that fit in the space between the rear speakers and rear strutbar. Solved my problems.

If you are going the free air route or any sub in the stock location, i would suggest lots of dynomat for the stock space. If you dont, it would rattle to no ends.

Default Sub box

Ok, a sub box WILL sound better, but does anyone sell (or have plans for) a sub box that will fit in the stock location and still come out for maintenance and/or repairs?

I am getting the roadster so I don't really have the alternative locations most people are using.

I just solved all my problems by putting in 8" Bazooka in that space. Sounds fine for people who just want some extra base and don't want to spent more that 200.00. I spent 100.00 on non powered bazooka and used my Rockford amp.
