Post Phonesafe : have your car call you!

I was searching about alarms at a BMW site and found this (the BMW belongs to a cute friend of mine). Anyway, it is a module which interfaces to the alarm signal of any alarm and dials out 3 numbers (numeric or text) to let you know. So like your car could call your cell phone or beeper! Cool! The best part is it is supposed to interface to any alarm, even OEM.

Here is a quote "I spoke to someone over at Phonesafe. He emailed me some info on installation and where to purchase the pre-paid sim cards in the US. He said it was $350. shipped for the US version of the GSM Dialer. I was thinking of trying it out on my oem alarm. Does anyone else want to order this and try it out too? PM me if your interested, otherwise, I'll post up once/if I get it done and it works.

Here is his email to me:

"The install is very easy, plus or minus from the alarm, please check if you have plus or minus out from your alarm upon a alarm.

Phonesafe Standard makes 3 calls to all types of phones but the best is to call another cell phone like you have in US.

So when your alarm goes it calls to your cellphone and leave the message “Caralarm” in the display.

Phonesafe Control can also switch 2 different relays in the car, some use it for closing the fuel pump other to activate the lights or siren if somebody steal the car. You can also remotely start a warmer in the wintertime.

A prepaid SIM-card is very common to use with the dialer, it needs a SIM-card like you use in a normal GSM 1900 MHz digital cellphone in US.

The reason is that it is cheaper than a monthly connection many times."

Thats all I know. Passing on the info, seems of great interest.

THIS sounds interesting! I've been looking for a way to start my car remotely from my cell phone. It's not quite clear whether I can do it with this device. The quoted line got my hopes up.

I have just sent an e-mail to the manufacturer asking if, in fact, not only this device can call me but I can connect to it as well and control other devices.

I will post their reply.

Please share the reply from the manufacturer. I read that line to be starting a "warmer" and not the car itself. Also, I think if you have manual transmission you would not be able to safely start the car remotely.

It took them a while to reply, and here is the message (their comments are shown in bold):
I'd like to know more about the GSM alarm product.

I read somewhere that your product can be used to activate devices (shut off fuel or turn on siren). It's not clear whether this happens when the alarm is triggered or if I can control it over the phone. Control it over the phone and automatic if you like

I'm interested in being able to start my car over the phone. Is it safe to do that ? Would I be able to dial into this device and control a cirquit (which, in turn, would activate the starter) ? Yes. Is it possible for this device to call me back and let me know whether the car started successfully? No. Can I shut it off? Yes.
They aren't trying very hard to sell this product, are they?
The fact that I can control cirquits by phone is great news! The puzzling part is, why would they say that this device can't call me back? Wouldn't it be the same as calling when the alarm goes off? Just use a different input!
