sub with stock HU
Anyone have this? Will the stock unit be good enough to run an amp and sub off of? I dont wanna ruin the stock look with a CD player and cant afford a screen so if it wont make me lose alot of power to the sub please let me know

I had a guy come into the shop today and tell me he hooked up a sub to an aftermarket head unit.. He couldn't understand why the head unit didn't work anymore.
The cheapest acceptable setup is getting an amp that has speaker level inputs, tapping off the rear speakers and connecting your sub to that amp. I would recommend one that does not need a remote wire. An MTX Audio TA4252 should work out ok as long as you choose the right single sub. (I'm going for cheap since cost is a concern) There are a lot of amps that have speaker level inputs and dont need a remote wire but this is the first one that comes to mind since I've installed this very same setup with good results

i am asking if you lose alot of power hooking up an amp and sub to the stock headunit.........i know you cant run just a sub off a HU without an amp. im just worried it wont sound as good as its potential if i stick with the stock HU with an amp and sub. is there a considerable loss in power or would you say the difference is negligable?

There is no loss of "power" - the amp is powered by the battery - all you do is tap into the rear speakers for the signal and run it to the amp - either one with speaker-level inputs or you need a line out converter to convert the signal so you can run RCAs.

I think instead of power loss you mean signal quality. Speaker level inputs or line out converter, nothing beats a straight set of RCA's from an aftermarket headunit. But it's not like your sitting in nice quiet environment to notice the difference.
I wouldn't bother with a line out converter, if you ever decide to replace the headunit later on it will end up in your toolbox.

yes, this setup is possible. but not the greatest. i choose to run a an amp with one 10" sub. I have the non bose headunit, and i used a hi-lo converter. If you just want base and want to keep your headunit stock for whatever reason, this is the way to go. pm me if u want more details on how i did this install.
