i noticed on courtesy parts.com that there is a 6disc changer addon available ($$$600 wow that stinks)
does this mean there is a bus cable coming out of the non-bose head unit. ?? If so this could mean aftermarket addons (mp3 cd changer, xm ,, etc.. right??)
i really would like to keep the head unit if i could add xm, and mp3 capabilites without going fm modulater route

The factory head unit does not have an axu input. The bus for the changer can't be used for an audio input, because it needs to see digital signals from the changer to open up the audio port. The bus is very complex, and it is almost impossible to rig up a circuit to get an aux in through the changer bus.
Plenty of people did the research, no companies make any adapter for the stock headunit yet. many have email companies in hopes to encourage production of an adapter for the Z, but no luck. The sponser for the Audio/Video forum had some suggestion and (i think) is working on a solution. So just have to wait or get a new system.
