Anybody heard a JL pre-loaded box?

Wonder if the box is really worth the extra $$$. Any thoughts?

I used to have 2 10w1 JLs in a JL bandpass box (wayyy back in the day) and it was definitely much better than 2 10w1s in any other box, and I've heard alot of their other pre-loaded boxes from each model line. They're definitely top-notch. the box volume (and port sizing for HO boxes) are optimixed for the subs that are in them. My vote is that its definitely worth it.
Those HO boxes are loud and crisp (and look really nice with the high quality red carpeting)...I hope you're not trying to fit that in a Z!

I would think it would be better because the port was designed by JL engineers. Also, the rigidity of the box would be higher than a regular box due to the inner structure. See it here:

I could be wrong, but it stands to reason that more internal bracing=stiffer box=less flex=better sound...

Thats a very cool design... I still don't think it justifies the pricing. How much do you think you would be able to discern the difference between this and a conventional vented enclosure? A long as the enclosure is built and tuned properly, it will sound incredible.
I do admit that I really like the internals on that box though..

it will not be better than making a box for that sub

yes i think the engineers know how to build a box for their sub , and it is a good box
in a sceme to make a profit they build the box as universally as possibly to allow for the box to fit in as many cars as possibly to sell more units
there is no secret to box building and no magic
a box custom made for your car and the sub will yeild better results
in other words , with the sub alone i am able to builld a box that sounds better and gets louder than that box
i am not giving you a hard time, their are people that compete in Sound quality , and or compete in Spl , and they do not use that box , why because they can make it louder , and or sound better , by building their own
does this make sense ?
if you do not know how to build a box , and you are miles away from a good shop i can suggest a few custom box builders that can design and build you a box in the $200 range and it will kill that box
thanks
I'm excellent at woodworking and can make a box just fine, it is knowing what dimensions to build it that confuses me. If you could recommend something that would help.
I'm thinking of getting a 13w7 now and building a ported box to match their recommended specs on their website:

Would that sound pretty good?

sounds great
i would recommend
3/4 MDF for the entire enclosure
i would double the face and or baffle with 2 x 3/4 " mdf = 1 1/2" face
i would port the enclosure using either aero ports or precision ports
they are flared and do not make port noise as a pvc port would
i would use wood glue and deck mate screws as they do not rust and have a beige coating on them
you can use either rhino liner for a painted look
you can use carpet
vinyl
tweed
or any covering you feel comforatble with
i would use T-nuts and bolts to fasten sub not just drill in with screws
you want to see how much length . width . height threw measuring in you car or truck you can devote to the enclosure i think you said SUV so you do not have to worry about the space getting enclosure in and out of vechicle
as there is plenty
you have net and gross volume
net is after port and sub displacement
gross is with port and sub displacement
the lower you tune the box the greater emphasis on low frequency
the higher you tune you box the less emphasis on low frequency
if your main thing in hip hop tuning around 35 hertz is good
if your main thing is rock and roll around 45 is good
you can do a sealed box if you wish there is nothing wrong with sealed much easier to do
again go to JL sight
if 1 each 13" W7
then you want to see what frequency they recommend for 1 each 13" w7
what the net volume they recommend is for 1 each 13" w7
and how many ports and what diameter and what length
i think 2 each 4" aero ports and lenght depends on desired tunning frequency
i looked on their site and could not find box recommendations
call the customer service line and ask
1st step
measure car
2nd get with JL for
net volume per sub
what frequency they recommend
with that you can they buy supplies
the we will take it from there

Check the pdf file I linked to. Recommended box dimensions are posted there. Does that seem like a good box? I've never built a box to anything other than manufacturer recommended spec, so straying from that is when I get lost.

they are using 1" for face
3/4 is no problem to buy mdf
1" may or may not be available from your local lumber supplier
if they have 1 " then i would buy 1/2 sheet 1" for face
and 1 full sheet 3/4" mdf 4' x 8' for the rest
i feel that the box you build from those specs will be better than the ho box
the box from those specs is 30 hertz and will slam the lows
they do not even give you the tuning on the HO box
also the ho box is a 12" and you will be using a 13"
can you follow those specs and dimensions from the recommed slot port design?????
all your doing is cutting pieces to spec and assembling ?
are you up for the challange ?
if you are not up for the challenge then
my boy B.J. Fisher can build you that box to spec for $200 shipped or a touch less
from the time you pay you can expect delivery of your enlcosure in 7-10 days normally depending on how busy he is
i get boxes from him from time to time in 4-7 days
it will be way better than any JL Pre-fab

Yeah, that box on the JL website is no challenge at all. I've turned an attic into a room with sheetrock, baseboard, lighting, carpet, electrical outlets, and A/C before, so I think building a box will be doable.
Thanks for the input.

i am not a big JL Fan but it is good stuff
