2007 Head Unit choices help
At first I wasn't going to change anything in my 07 Enthusiast. I thought I would be ok with the stock audio set up, until I discovered that the non-Bose unit dislikes MP3s
So after coming from my Prelude and being spoiled with iPod connectivity, I found out that the stock unit just isn't going to work for me. The thing is, I have a few choices on the table, and each has its own pros and cons. This thread is to help me choose which one would be the "best".
Note- for steering wheel controls, I realize you can buy the PAC thing, but I am not sure if it works on the older HU's. I know the newer ones support it though.
1) Old Alpine unit (CDA-7894 or CDA 9906) + AUX cable w/ iPod = most cost effective
Pros:
- I already have the units, just need the install kit
- Older Alpine units are much better than the newer kits.
- Instant gratification- I can install as soon as I get the kit
Cons:
- Need to run iPod through the iPod- much rather control through head unit
- iPod doesn't turn off on its own after turning car off.
- Lose steering controls
2) New Alpine 9887 + iPod = $$$ expensive but complete integration
Pros:
- iPod control through head unit
- retain steering wheel control, but need to purchase PAC unit
Cons:
- Sound control not fully enabled unless you buy $300 software (no bass or treble)
- Expensive: new head unit = ~$300, PAC unit = ~ $70, cable = $30, software = $300
- Have to wait until I can afford everything
Its tough call for me. I had a newer HU in the Prelude and controlling the iPod through that was perfect. The AUX cable link is good, but not as good as going through the head unit.
So, what do you guys think? Am I wrong about the older units not being compatible with the PAC?? The PAC: is it a sensor that you have to place by the head unit? If so, thats sort of stupid. Isn't there a way to do it without having anything exposed?
