Default Police Scanners

I'm interested in gettting a nice portable hand held police scanner. Do any of you have any information on what would be a good one to get? what frequency ranges does the scanner have to be able to pick up for it to get all the good police talk? I just went to Radio shack and picked one up for $170 but I don't think it's that great, I'm going to return it and buy a better one.. maybe it's just cuz I don't know how to work it. but any information would be great.
Thanks
Richard

One main problem today is that most cops are using cell phones, I think that you won't hear much. You can find the ranges of freq. on line somewhere. or buy one that scans. I use to have a scanning Bearcat, I found the freqs, but more and more they started using the cellphone.

The radio shack ones are actually pretty good they just take a little bit of a learning curve to get used to. Just dont get caught driving around with it. B/C thats not legal.
