Default My Z measured 145.8 dB!!!

Well guys, a few weeks back, I was part of a local Audio/ Car show sponsored by Cartoys. They had two different competitions, A show competition (based on looks) and an SPL/dB competition. I competed in both with my 350z, and my 1978 Silver Anniversary Corvette competed in the show competition.

My Z got second best in it's class (I got beat by an Evo 8) for looks, and the corvette got 2nd best in overall show (I was beat by a 1967 Chevy Nova with a procharged LS2 under the hood).

In the audio competition, the Z put out 140 dB the first run, and 145.8 dB the second run while playing a 56 Hz continuous tone. I didn't think it would be that loud, but it sure as hell beat everyone else in my class.

I'll post pics later on, but I just wanted to brag a little right now.

Heres the list of what I have:

Eclipse CD7000 deck w/ Ipod in
Kicker 250x2 Amplifier
Kicker SS Components
Custom Fiberglass Door-Speaker Pods
Tsunami Low-Oxygen Wires
Kicker Mono-D Block 750 Watt amp (Birth sheet rated it at 945 watts)
Tsunami 5 Farad Capacitor
Kicker Comp VR10" Subs (x2)
Zenclosures Under Strut Box with amp rack

congrats, I wonder what my 2 12" L7s on 1800 watts would have clocked. I've got a Comp VR now and couldn't be happier.

Waiting on pics...

to be honest i am 38
i have had systems in all of my cars since 1986

so for over 20 years i been bangin my ear drums

i would venture to say i might have slight high frequency hearing loss at best

but nothing that much to speak of

so from personal experience hearing loss is not a for sure thing with all who listen to music at dangerous levels

termlab does not go on floor

termlab only goes to windsheild

it is a box, like the size of a pack of gigarettes, with 4 suction cups and can only be mounted to glass

they used and audio control mic if was at the kickpanel on the floor

so if you were windows down then that it is outlaw not legal
legal is windows up

again Audio control is used in an outlaw fashion at kickpanel
and legal fashion on dash

any pics on you in the lanes so i can see what they used

you would be hard pressed to get a 145.8 with 750 watts on 2 tens on the TL

with the audio control mic i score

Hatch 0-18
Travis Brandy FL 147.3 (Legal) ac mic windows up mic on dash

Travis Brandy FL 152.9 ( outlaw ) ac mic windows down mic by kick

on the TL again on the glass i am doing about 145 db with 10,000 watts
so i kinda feel your not gonna acheive that number 145.8 with 2, each 10" and 750 watts

if i am wrong i would be surpised but have no trouble admitting when i am wrong

make sure it was a TL and not a AC mic

just because it was on the floor doesnt mean it was an AC mic... they can put TL's on the floor just as easily.

and as far as what mic goes where, that is up to the sanctioning org, class, and their rules... it varies. and a 145 with a pair of 10"s in a hatch should be easily done... if you are only doing a 145 legal with 10kw in your Z, something is HORRIBLY wrong with your install... seriously... i was doing 145's(legal TL) in a trunk car with just over 1000 watts a few years back... i was doing 148's(legal TL) with 5kw in a non-spl install in my previous truck... i was doing 155's(legal ac) with 2500 watts in a stock SUV install before all of that... so 10kw and only a 145 is pretty bad man, hate to be the one to tell you that, but something isnt right...

but a 145 in the kick, with the door open, doesnt say too much either... especially not out of a hatch...

if i am doing something wrong than not sure why i have 20 1st place trophies at home

145 on the TL with 1 each 12" sub on a box tuned to 30 hertz is very respectable

remember hes playing 56 hertz tones , i am playing 40 hertz tones

mine is getting that score with a daily drive sql set up

let me tune my box to 50 hertz then play 55 hertz tones bet it will be way louder

my car is not a tone machine it was built to play music and kill the lows

my truck with 5kw was tuned to 30Hz, did 148.6 @46 Hz, did 146 @30Hz. it also did 147Db legal on the TL with music, not tones...

my taurus (keep in mind its a trunk install, not a hatch...) did 145 @42Hz with about 1000 watts...

both of those were daily driver setups for SQL, the truck more so than the explorer. i still say that with 10kw you have WAAAAAYY more potential in your set up, and that something is severely handicapping you. if i had that kind of power and was only doing 145's, i would be unhappy. if i had that kind of power in a hatch and was only doing 145's i would be wondering what the hell was wrong, because something is clearly wrong.

im not trying to put your stereo down by any means man, i just think either you hit power compression a long time ago, you dont have as much power as you think, or something is seriously wrong in your install. i would be willing to bet that anyone with any stereo knowledge could hit 145's legal on the TL in a Z with under 1kw, and could easily make a DD that could do it with around 2kw or less.

to start with the hifonics maxximus really needs 2 x 300 amp alts

6 x kinetic 2400

4 runs on 0 awg
as it is fused with 4 each 250 amp anl fuses

my alt is a single 200 amp
1 run of zero
3 stinger 680

i have enough juice just to keep it from clipping but not to get full potencial

anyways i appreciate your comments
thanks

i still would like to hear from the poster if he can confirm it was a tl for sure not a ac

that being said it still is putting out at least 5000 watts cause it aint clipping

and i know if i tune my box to 50 hertz , bump 55 hertz tones , and go from a single 12" to a single 15"
staying in the same 0-18 hatch class my 145 would 147 -148

properly alted and batteried might see 150

i got no more space for batteries

and i hate the way highly tuned boxes sound

again thanks

No offense, Hoss, but you are comparing what you've done in a different car. Is that really applicable here as a comparison?

yes, and no at the same time.

yes, it was a different vehicle(s), and they wont compare to the Z. but the Z has SEVERAL advantages acoustically over those other vehicles... smaller cabin = less air is needed to be excited to create the pressure levels, shape of the roof/windshield is angled as such to almost channel the pressure to that area, hatchback design is an obvious (no barriers for the pressure to have to move through...

however, through this conversation, has arose a challenge amongst me and some friends . we are having a big stereo build day the first weekend in january, and we are going to do some SPL testing in the Z . we are setting the benchmark to be at least a 145 legal, sealed up, on the TL mic using 2 8" woofers. personally, i am wanting to try and break a 150, but i will be happy to do a 145 . we havent set out all the rules yet, but it should be an interesting challenge to find out how much pressure we can build with the limits that we set forth , and yes, i will post results on it here

okay let me clarify for everyone.

i know for a fact it was term lab. i saw the program on the laptop screen and i saw the pack of cigarette looking microphone placed on my floorboard. it most definitly had suction cups on it and it was most definitly placed on my floorboard on driver side right by my dead pedal.

the loudest measurement was taken with my door closed, we tried doing other measurements with the doors open. I have witnesses who saw me do it if you dont believe me. I'm sorry i didnt grab pictures of my car in the lane.

they had me run a sweep of all frequencies, and then they figured out the loudest harmonic. i played a few hz before the tone, then went up 1 hz at a time until i was a few hz above the highest frequency.

there was a dot-matrix screen that said how loud the car was. it was hard to read cuz my head was vibrating so bad though.

there was a guy there who had a suburban with 9 batteries, and 4 1000 watt amplifiers. his loudest was around 168 if i remember correctly. i really think that with 10,000 watts you should be a lot louder.

i believe you if you are confirmimg a TL cause it either had suction cups or it did not

you say it did i believe you 100%

never saw the use of one on the floor or kick but hey learn something new everyday

i can;t get a reading of what my car can do with a TL fasten to my kick as my kicks are suede and hold components

but i would like to know what it will do in my car fastening a tl to my kick but i can't do it as i stated

nice score

good job
