Default I need a sub/amp understrut box DIY

Please don't flame me ok. I used the search and I came up with nothing. I am kinda new to installing stereos and subs and amps, so I just need a lil know how. I refuse to be charged $285 to get it done by <not going to say their name> for them to install a sub, amp, and box that I already have. I asked them for a quote and they tapped away on the calculator and they said $285 dollars. is it me or does that sound rather expensive? Anyways, it's either best buy, circuit city, or me who will be installing this thing. Unless anyone in the Mid-A has a hook up for me. Please help.

Have a ball man. $285 is a good price to have everything installed right. CC or Best buy will most likely hack it up as bad if not worse than someone with no experience.

I understand trying to save here and there but YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

I say DIY is always best if you have patience and somewhat of an understanding of what's going on. Installing an amp/sub/box combo (especially if the box is premade) is quite easy once you understand the basic components needed.

Electricity from battery to amp
sound signal from headunit to amp
sound signal from amp to sub

It can be overwhelming to someone who's never done it before, but once it's done you get the satisfaction of saying "i did that myself and saved near $300". THAT MONEY CAN GO TOWARDS COMPONENTS AND AMP FOR THE FRONT STAGE!!!!!

What else do you have going in? Is the rest stock? I can try my best to walk you through it on this thread if you'd like.

Yeah, I hear ya. the DIY way gives you a good feeling. I know how the connections go. My issue is mostly with the routing of the wires. Like where to find certain wires and stuff. No DIY guides though fellas? $285 just seemed like it was expensive. And if I can't do it then it shouldn't be to hard for the BB or CC people to do it.

poke around in the recent threads here over the past month or so......there are a couple threads with diagrams of how the interior plastic panels come out and stuff.

Do you know where you are going to mount the amp?

I bought the premade box from another Z owner and it had a mounting space for the amp.

I need to find this diagram you speak of.

i am not sure how much work you are needing from what you posted

looks like you want a box, sub, and amp , installed

figure $ 50 an hour x 5-6 hours

$ 300 sounds perfect

Funny they told me 1.5 to 2 hours
I already have the custom made understrut enclosure. All I would need from them is the wires and the work. It's a 600 RMS sub 500 amp mono block. The cabling shouldn't be that much ya know.

Not yet unless I really have to. With that being said I did price a single slot head unit I wanted. Best buy dude told me that I'd need a different wiring kit for my Z and it wouldn't be a simple harness job. Then I was thinkin after I walked out without a head unit......are they for real? I mean, if I ain't doin this myself then I guess to get it done right is going to be 300 dollars.....what an expensive hobby. hahaha!

The store that said it would be 285 dollars said 1.5 to 2 hours. Not BB or CC. It's a good shop from what I hear and I am sure they are. Just expensive. I believe they expect anyone in there has to be well of in the pockets ya know.

Oh and I found this via *********.com's FAQ section

How much does it cost to install subwoofers?

The price to have a sub installed is not always crystal clear. There are several factors to account for such as: How many subs? Do you have a sub-box? Will you need a custom sub-box? Do you already have amps installed? Also prices will vary from shop to shop. If you have all the parts (subs, box, wires, amp), then usually you can expect to pay around 100$ for installation of 1 amp and 1 sub box.

285 is completely reasonable.

here is why, its a 2 hour job or so, and shops normal rate is about 75 bucks an hour, so thats 150, plus wiring cost.

but then, the biggest reason why you are being asked 285 is that you did not purchase any product throgh them. Its a dealers way of protecting themselve. i mean think about it, if someone purchased all the stuff from them, and they do the same exact install sa you, its 2 hours time, and they can say quote 150 bucks or 200 bcks in labor, and add in the other profit, ntey can make say 500bucks more total profit.

now you come here, and for the same 2 hours, no way they can charge 150 bucks, thats less than 1/3 or so of their normal profit if they sold the system, so they charge a bit more to compensate, and 285 bucks sounds about right to be honest.

please dont complain about it, cuase in the end, shops have overhead, and their time spent on a car IS literally money. so its just normal business sense. I mean, waht good is a shop that is all nice to people and dont charge more on stuff they dont sell if htey go out of business in a few months? it happens all the time, the really relaly nice guys who bend over backwards for people, and i know quite a few, often dont last.

I am in a different istuatio becuase i work out of my houes now, but before, when i had a shop, i woudl charge similar too for good quality work

With BB saying you need a different wiring kit,,,I assume you have the Bose set up. If so,,,you will need the Bose Bypass Adapter. If you have the stock non-bose headunit,,,you can use the JL cleansweap or Rockford threesixty-1.

They allow you to maintain your stock headunit while offering all connections for your amplifier's, ect. ect. Just a suggestion.
