Default carputer steering wheel interface??

guys I need your help, I started thinking about interfacing the switches on the steering wheel (Volume, seek, etc.) with a carputer. Here is what im thinking find the leads for each of the commands then I can figure out how to have the computer deal with it. But I ran into a prob so far:

when you push a different button does the resistance in the circuit change?? I think im reading this correctly. So its not different leads that each button shorts. Any ideas on how I could do this? Or am I reinventing the wheel and someone has already done this?

Yes - each switch direction changes the resistance in two different leads. The PAC interfaces can read this resistance change and transmit a matching learned IR signal so if your carputer can take an IR input for the radio controls you're golden.

is the PAC interface meant to mimic the remote control of a specific head unit or is it a ir signal you can adjust?

Couldn't you just plug this straight into a serial port and make a basic driver to read a differential signal?

No.

You could get a circuit made to interface with your serial port though...
I'm not sure exactly where they are measuring the resistance in that info you posted though...

edit: oh I get it now. You could easily get a circuit made to convert the signals into something you can use.

I remember back in my Honda carputer days when I lurked on mp3car.com that this guy in MD with a G35 coupe actually took the time to rip his steering wheel apart and do this. I would run some searches on there and I am sure you will find his install....one of the best ones out there.

Get PAC adapter and usbuirt.

Then get girder to recognize the IR signals and kick out corresponding keystrokes.

I've actually been looking up stuff on Girder and it seems like the most likely/easiest answer. However i've also read that somehow the PAC adapter lags after you give it a command. Also thanks for the info project3fiftyZ, im going to look on there and hopefully find something that I could hardwire.
