Default Chamfered Baffles

So looking at the instruction manual for the DLS UP6i, I came across mention of chamfering the baffles for proper airflow of the woofers. Wondering how many of you actually took the time to do this, especially those of you that are using spacers. Does it really make a difference, or is it one of those "in theory" things.

I will chime in by saying that I have not done this in the Z (of course I am using Mike's door pods which are molded plastic). I have practiced this in home theater speaker building, but not in car audio. The reason I haven't done this in car audio is simply because I don't typically use 3/4" stock for baffles of mids. I will usually use 3/8" stock.

If you are mounting to 3/4" stock, it could make a difference in the airflow of the woofer depending on the basket design. If the basket is relatively closed off or not really designed well, then it could make an audible difference, although perhaps not readily noticeable by the average listener in the car's noisy environment. If the woofer's basket is well vented/designed, then the difference will be negligible IMHO.

Please note that I am NOT trying to imply the UP6's basket is not designed well. What I am saying is perhaps for some design reason DLS needed to keep the basket beefy (maybe strength?).

Here is a look at the UP6 basket (stamped steel):

Here is a look at the very nicely designed and open basket on the Peerless Exclusive (cast frame):

Do a test with and without chamfering (that's tough to say ). See if you hear a difference.

Perhaps chamfering except where the screw holes are. I would be worried about the material being too thin with a full chamfer.

That is a problem, especially if you like to use t-nuts or hurricane nuts.

The reason I bring this up is because I've already got the zenclosure 1" spacers. Yeah, I know I'm being lazy for not making my own spacers, but it's a real time saver. I think with 1" tho, I should definitely look into puttin some amount of chamfer in there. But we'll see how it sounds as is.

Thanks for the input guys.

My money is on the "you'll never hear a difference" side of the betting ring.
