yes, it COULD be done. I've seen it done, and it faces the front.
I sat in a Z like that, and it was really uncomfortable having a 12" sub blaring 5" from my ear.
You can buy really nice 10"'s facing the back, and if you buy good ones, you won't tell any difference from a 12"

2 10" woofers firing toward the rear in a good box will far outperform a single 12" woofer in a small car. For a 12" woofer to sound perfectly accurate it needs to be mounted a minimum of 8 - 10 feet away from the listener and a 10" sub needs to be about 5 - 7 feet away, thus the 10" will always sound more accurate when they are mounted so close to you. Three 8" woofers would actually reproduce musical clarity the best in the 350Z IMO. Some of the best sounding systems I have ever built/heard in small cars use multiple 8" woofers in vented boxes. If done right they can sound incredible. I built an IASCA competition system for a guy back in '98 that had six 8" subs in a hatchback civic that could knock the fillings out of your teeth it had so much punch to it. Ever since then I have been a fan of using lots of 8" subs rather than a couple 12's.

i was waiting for somebody to post something like this! i made a box for my 12" sub and it is kinda shaped weird. it doesn't take up any spare tire room and has the amp rack on the side behind the seats. Sure i have no room for anything else in the hatch, although i did still manage to fit an entire golf bag full of clubs back their(sideways). anyways ill post pics soon!

aight here we go. its got two vents running down the bottom of the box out the back. it slaps hella hard! amp is chilling on the back. the box is such a tight fit it fits snug onder the strut brace and doesn't move even in cornering and acceleration

new sub box by tccustoms on ebay, goes in front of strut bar, a little more showy and it looks like it fits well, but not stealthy and more expensive.
