Default sub woofer issue

got a question, i just replaced my amp in my car cause it was causing the sub to excursion reverse instead of a forward motion. basically it looks like its being sucked into the box. someone told me the speaker could be damaged. at first i thought it was the amp so i had the amp replace with a nine1. all input welcome

So you replaced your amp. Did it fix the problem? If so, how does the sub sound now? That would be a good way to tell if the speaker is damaged.

are you talking about the factory system? if not, you just have reverse polarity sent to the sub. or the 180 degree setting is "on" on the amp.

All speakers suck and push air - that's the way the work. Sound waves are sine waves - they go up and down causing the speaker's motor to go in and out. If the box is of the proper size to match the parameters of the subwoofer then it's happy. It's been designed to work against a certain size box volume compressing and rarefying that air as the woofer cone moves in and out. Too big or too small of a box and the woofer will either be constrained or too loose. Too loose is just as bad as constrained as the woofer's driven with enough power will slam off the mechanical limits often damaging themselves.

PS: Most subwoofer amplifiers have a phase reversal switch. The thing is set by ear by most people as there's not a right or wrong starting point.

So after re-reading this thread again......I'm confused on exactly what the PROBLEM is.....does your sub not sound right? Or are you just concerned that it visually looks like it's being sucked into the enclosure - which in all honesty, I'm still trying to picture what you are talking about.......

the sub does produce sound but it looks like the air in the box is being sucked out and the rubber of the sub is excursioning in instead of just vibrating.

From reading the OP, I got the impression the sub was stuck "In" when you sent a signal to it.

Is this the case?

For example, the sub is not moving in AND out as if it was working properly, it moves IN and stops....?

I wouldn't worry about it. If it sounds proper, there should be nothing wrong. Much like Paul350z said, subs push/pull in both directions, so it's not like the sub is supposed to push out only.

One thing you could do to make sure the voice coil is moving freely in both directions is to use a 9v battery. touch the speaker cable (disconnected from the amp of course) to the 9v battery, the sub will either push out or pull in......then reverse the battery and the sub will move in the other direction. If it fails to move in either direction, you may have a problem with your v/c or motor structure.

****Conduct this test at your own risk. Sending 9v battery current through your subwoofer's voice coils is safe, however there are too many other variables for ME to rely on YOU using common sense for that I can not cover all possible situations. I assume no responsibility if you, your car, your amp, your subwoofer, or anything else is damaged by conducting this test.****

subs do move in and out

going in either direction won't hurt it

your polarity was reversed is my guess and that the original amp is fine
