Default Headunit

I am looking for a solid headunit..

I am am not sure if I want a single din headunit or if I want a double din touch screen unit.

I would like to get out for about $500, but I also realize that will not get me a 8120 which is a complete bada$$.

I would like some feedback as to what the different brands pro's and con's are.

Unfortunately I find most aftermarket single din units to be garish and tacky... too fast and furious for my taste...

Thanks

Personally..I find it kind of tacky to have a single din HU in the Z, just save your money for 2 more months and get the HU you really want.

Default double din

I agree, I am pretty sure of what I want..

The Kenwood 8120 is a beast.. but 1500? that's almost as much as I spent on the entire rest of my system...

What about some of the lower end new pioneer units? I think it's like a the pvd4000 or something... it's like 500 or so... anyone have any 1st hand exp. with the unit?

I prefer a single-din H/U simply because I believe the available high-end single-din H/U’s outperform most double-din units. I also prefer a component approach which the Z supports well with its various cubbies. I put the screen “up-top” (in the upper-forward cubby), and use the rear cubbies to hold the other devices. I also get a forward storage shelf (something the Z lacks) with a single-din device.

Of course, some people would not like this look at all, preferring a double-din “wall” on the dash.

Default Clarion

Is Clarion better than they used to be in reference to quality?

back in 96 I had a higher end Clarion deck and the "jog" button went out within two years. I swore off Clarion since... but they have do have a sweet looking high end single din unit now...

^^ The high-end Clarion H/U’s are terrific. They are single-din units providing exceptional sound output. I like them best with an external amp (but not necessarily teamed with other Clarion devices).

Eclipse also makes some terrific high-end H/U’s (that also happen to be single-din).

If you want the best Single Din Head Unit its the Clarion DRZ9255 IMO. Double Din I would go with the Kenwood 8120.

I agree. The Clarion DRZ9255 is just a great single-din H/U.

Your recommendation for a double-din device (Kenwood 8120) is also a great choice for someone who wants the more simple solution.

The Clarions look like they came back to the future from the 80's with Doc Brown and Marty. And it's super expensive (over the OP's $500 limit): how would they compare to a $500 Alpine or Pioneer single-din?

if I prefer the look of a double din, are there any real differences between the 5k and the 4k other than motorized faceplate vs. static lcd?

Default 5000

Ok per Pioneer the 5000 has two sets of RCA's.

Front, rear or non fading...

I have two amps and the rear channels are not amplified.

How do you set the output from the headunit for the rear/non fading rca outs to be non fading? Is it a setting within the sub?

What I am getting at, is the reason I want a new deck is that I need a nonfading subwoofer control...

I will consider the purchase if I can get these questions answered...

How much? any extra goodies?
