I was thinking about something like this so it is nice to see the results. And I saw it before I ordered my new stereo. Looking at this again it now bothers me much more that the LCD display hole is clear now instead of the amber color like it should be rather than it sticking out a little bit. Dead giveaway to everyone I think whether they know the car or not. That would require more work and more mounting depth.
I just got a Kenwood and the Metra kit becuase the CD quit loading on the OEM. The Metra is really disappointing to say the least. Now I am not sure what to do. I'm ready to hack the OEM face even though it still partially works but I am really doubting I'll like the results. The whole order might go back and take my chances with an OEM replacement off ebay so I can sleep at night. I was looking forward to the better sound but keeping the stock look is going to be tough.
Any other stealth ideas? The cubby holes in the back are too small stock to place a radio in. The room is there without the liner but I'd want to keep that. Kenwood does not make it easy to extend the faceplate to a remote location - the connector on the HU side would be nearly impossible to solder to. I can't find a CD changer that has pre-outs and a wired remote instead of a new HU. They all are FM modulated. That is what I was searching for before I decided to get the Kenwood and use the idea in this thread.

Exactly what I'm looking for.

Unfortunately the company is in Hong Kong. Shipping to the U.S. is $37. Ouch!

I thought they were in the UK. It works out to about $59 dollars or so. To me, a very cheap investment to protect an expensive radio

Yeah, I'll prolly do it anyway. It just feels wrong to pay more in shipping than for the item itself.

Too bad there's not a local distributor!

Pls post pix if you purchase this. I'd also be interested in knowing how long it takes to ship.

And thanks for posting the link!

What good does it do to make it look like you have some other car's cheap OEM HU in it?

I kept the whole order and installed a single DIN Kenwood with the Metra. But I used the double DIN factory brackets and the Kenwood trim plate and it is in there really secure and looks good. All you have to do is drill new holes in the factory brackets and trim off the two upper arms of the Metra in the back above the radio so you can use the steel ones from the OEM. I am happy with that part. Still not sure what I am doing to hide it. Taking the faceplate every single time and hating it. Not that a fake OEM faceplate would cause me to usually leave the Kenwood plate in there also. What a pain in the butt no matter what. At least the sound is worth it for now. Never realized how convenient settling on some things in life is actaully more enjoyable. End of whining I am enjoying the radio. It makes the whole aftermarket system shine.
