Question why no head unit with integrated hard disk MP3 player

I have a Creative nomad3 jukebox which I think is the greatest thing ever. I've been looking for a single head unit that could do the same thing (+ radio / CD ) with no luck. Why isn't there a huge market for this type of component?

sorry I meant to add reasonably priced

Those two units really make me mad.. 1300-1500 dollars for 10GB of storage... and you can't even move mp3's onto the tiny hard drive. you have to use some wacked out format. I don't want to have to rip all my CD's again. When would you even be able to do it... my commute is like 15 minutes... so am I supposed to sit in my garage all night poping disks in and out?

My 20gb portable player is MUCH smaller than a head unit, and costs less then 400 dollars. It has many options for getting compatble formats on and off it. I just don't understand the lack of options for in car.

I have seen this.. don't remember the company name.. but they offered it for a reasonable price.. it has a remote display unit and a large hard drive.

I think it was Neo... or somthing like that.

I have a 20 GB Kenwood music keg. I went with it instead of a CD changer and love it. I also have a Kenwood HU but you can use a FM modulator if you don't want to change out the HU.

it is a new concept so reasonably priced is out of the question...that kind or head unit may never reach the lower end of the price spectrum... find a friend who works at best buy or something and have them buy it for you.. .. they will get a huge discount for sure

they only get to buy so many things in a certain amount of time.. so the friend better like you alot! hehe, the discount is 5 or 10% above cost.. so yeah, pretty damn good.

One of the reasons that there is no cheap HD head unit is demand. I mean really, think about it. Why buy a head unit that you have to remove from the car to sync with your computer (wireless synching is nice, but pricey). You can use it as a portable. The easiest solution is obviously to get a hand held HD player (nomad, iPod) and use either an FM modulator or aux in jack. You can use it in your car, house, wherever. And, it does not need to be removed from the dash. Does this fit your needs? Well, maybe not. However, I certainly think that this idea has kept down the demand for HD-based head units.

Personally, I just installed my new head unit yesterday and it has a front-mounted aux in jack. Guess what I will be using that for?

Hope this helps.

Apline has that new Ipod interface thing...

All of alpine's head units have the capability to sync with Ipods.

You buy this little box and plug the ipod up the HU. Its like the thing in the new BMWs

A company called Dension makes a single din headunit with an integrated HDD (up to the max capacity of 2.5 inch HDDs) which can be removed to sync with your main PC. I think that they are European so the US prices are a little less competitive than I've seen offered in the UK (a world first imo). The US website is www.densionusa.com.

I've never used them so I can't offer personal experience however the product looks very well sorted.

I have a NEO35 car jukebox installed into a Blaupunkt San Francisco in my wife's car which works great (it has a 80gigs of MP3s on it). However the NEO is a bit of a flakey product (check out those support forums!) and I have a Omnifi DMP1 on order to install into my 350Z.

Cheers
Eric
