Default Audio Install question, i searched :)

hey everyone

I'm installing a new headunit, front and rear speakers on my 2003 BOSE with navi Touring Z. Now, i'm going to have an external amp, and the headunit comes with preamps so thats pretty easy. The front speakers are Component and rears coaxial. The rears should be simple to swap out. But my questions are for the front. I'm planning on using the stock Bose wiring because i don't want to re-run all the speaker wiring. Are there any tips someone can give me to installing the components. Are there any wiring adapters i need for the speaker? What wires should i cut or splice at the door to go to my crossovers? Any help would be fantastic! Also, can someone give me a link to the appropriate wiring harness adapter for the headunit, so i don't have to cut the splice the factory wires. I see all these ebay ones, but they don't specify if they are for bose or not. thank you so much

not to be rude, but by the scope of your questions I'd say this project is above your ability, you may want to consider having this system installed.

There are aftermarket adapters that plug into the stock speaker connector in the door, so that you don't have to cut anything. Where are you mounting your amp and crossovers?

Enough that you can use most decent, affordable aftermarket amps. Then again, I can't assume what you can afford.

Agreed with guy above me... you need to do A LOT of research before you even think about making your first purchase or running your first wire. This forum has been around for ~7 years, and I can assure you all of your questions have been answered at least once.

Thank you for the replies guys. I'll be mounting the crossovers in the doors if there is a place they fit, if not i'll mount them in the cubby behind the passenger seat, and possibly the amplifier there as well on an amp i'll make. I'll keep the cubby open or make a mesh grill for everything to breathe.

- Second, this install is not above my skill or knowledge level. I've installed subwoofers and a headunit on my Mazda 6 and ran all the wiring myself, and never had a problem. If you really do look at my questions carefully you'll see that i am just asking if any wire adapters exist so i can plug them in instead of cutting the factory bose speaker wires. I didn't ask how to install, or how to run my wiring. I simply asked if there are any tips or anything i should look out for because every car is different especially if a stock bose system is installed. I've taken apart my dash doors, and i know how to solder wiring and work with electrical, so i don't think its far from my skill level.

KMAN, you told me that there are adapters to plug into the speaker. but can you send me a link to a product or something? thats what i'm looking for. thank you again

I did look at your question before I answered, lets look at a typical install shall we:
Amps are usually mounted where..........in the rear of the car, trunk, hatch, glove box under seats, so why would you run the speaker wire coming from the amp all the back up front to the head unit to tap the factory speaker harness (by the way thats where the speaker harness is). just didnt sound like a question somebody with any experience would ask. Have you ever even heard of a speaker hrness adapter? I hav'nt!

What are you saying? There's no reason to be rude. First off, yes amplifier mounted in the back. The patch cables (RCA) from the headunit will run to the amplifier in the back. From the amplifier, the speaker wire will go to the crossovers which will either be mounted in the glove box or in the door, and then from the crossover to the speakers in the doors.

Now my question is....where did you get this from "so why would you run the speaker wire coming from the amp all the back up front to the head unit to tap the factory speaker harness"? I said nothing like that. That doesn't even make sense.

Oh and have i heard of speaker wire adapters? Ummm yea.... Crutchfield sells them if you buy the speakers from there. Why would i ask about an item i don't know exists? Do you know what they are? Probably not, which is why you've never heard of them. Most factory speakers have a clip near the speaker, and you unclip the speaker rather than cut the wires. Now there are often adapters that you can plug in with bare wires on the other end to hook up a new speaker. If you don't understand me, here's a picture below... and also the thread on a s2000 component install.

I can 100% do an install and am not retarded. I asked two questions, that don't even ask HOW to DO the install!!! I asked about wiring to crossovers, and where I can get a couple products that I KNOW would assist me in MY INSTALL. I didn't ask you to criticize me about my abilities. Next time i'll be more clear.

Are you running completely new speaker wire from the crossovers to the speakers? That means you are going to drill through the door molex connectors, meaning you won't need an adapter for the stock speaker connectors. On the other hand, if you are going to run the new speaker wire from the crossovers and splicing in to the aftermarket speaker wire adapter behind the HU, then you will need an adapter for the speakers.

When I last went that route, I got the adapters from Crutchfield. Here is what I found: http://www.crutchfield.com/g_103100/...s.html?tp=1025

you know, i'm not sure which method i'm going to do yet. I'm starting to lean toward just running all new 12 gauge wiring instead of using the stock wires. it seems like less of a hassle. i'm just worried about drilling the molex connectors. but other than that, the rest of the install should be okay. Thank you so much for the help.

The molex is evil. Don't take on this job lightly, as you risk damaging the BCM (body control module), and then your install will turn into a nightmare. It's already bad enough with how difficult it is to reach them and then putting them back together. Expect cut up hands, and lots of frustration. Aside from that, running new wire does assure you that you aren't leaving anything to chance in the new system.
