Default Audio system upgrade Polk DB speakers

As far as I'm concerned the poorerst aspect of the 350z is the sound system.

So after about two weeks of ownership I decided to upgrade the sound system.

In my previous vehicle I had installed a blaupunkt HU with Vifa tweeters and mids. As I did not know if that setup would be easily installed in my 350 I decided to go with a less drastic approach.

I ordered a HU installation and wiring kit from Crutchfield together with a set of Polk Audio DB650 6.5" coaxials for the doors and DB375 6.75" coaxials for the rears. As always with Crutchfield the package arrived on time and even with parts I needed but did not know I would need for the installation ( spacers and brackets for the front speakers).

I proceeded to uninstall the factory speakers using an ilustrated guide elswhere on the net. I lost the address but a search in Yahoo should produce the page. When I saw the factory drivers, the reason for the poor quality sound was clear. Installation was pretty staight forward with three exceptions. long bolts ( 1.5") are needed to install the front, these bolts must be cut after installation to exact legth to avoid protrution to the grills; The rears are specked as 6.75" but the baskets are larger in diameter than the factory openings for the installation, so a 0.5" spacer is needed to install the rears ( I did not have the spacers so I made them with layered Dybnamat original); the front speaker cable connectors are not NIssan standard so you must cut and splice them and install small extensions for the speaker connections. All are minor but I thought I should mention. Inastallation took about 1.5 to 2 hrs.

Results.

With the stock Clarion HU the sound is noticeably improved, midrage clarity is vastly improved as is bass reproduction. No need for a sub woofer, unless you are a bass freak.

The upgrade cost. $220.00 and is highly recomended as an inexpensive fix to the factory sound. I'm sure the sound would be even better with the Balupunkt as the sound quality from FM is quite poor on the factory HU, buy on CD is very nice.

Thanks for the info. Maybe I'll do that later on.
