Default Go out of town, speakers dead upon return...

Hey all, maybe some of you can point me in the right direction as to where to start looking to solve this problem. I went out of town for 8 days and left my 2003 Z Track at home, it wasn't touched by anyone during this time.

I come back and the car fires up perfectly, no problems there at all. However, I am getting zero sound from my speakers. Not even a "whir" sound or static if I turn the volume all the way up. The stock non-bose head unit appears to be function perfectly normal, it is taking cds no problem and no sounds come out of the speakers on both Radio/CD mode. I can change the radio station and shuffle through tracks on a dics without issue.

So...where should I start looking to solve this issue. Could this possible be a fuse? Would it help to disconnect the battery? Thanks in advance!!

A 2008 ought to be covered by the warranty still yes?

With the radio changing and CD shuffling the radio fuse is OK. Non-Bose means no amplifier nor-amplifier fuse to check. Sounds like the head end is DOA. Since these things are micro-processor controlled you might try unplugging the ground lug of the battery, say a prayer, and then reconnect the battery to see if that resets the radio.

Post up if that works. Good luck.

Assume that the head unit signal for rear speakers is dead. Very common for no-Bose unit.

yes, its an 03 and i checked the fuses, all ok.

Does this disable all of the speakers? Also new developments, when I turn the key to on, I head a quick "pop/thud" type of sound ONLY from the front left speaker, and then still silence.

Hi Drew,

You have an OEM Clarion H/U. I had the same thing happen with a 2003 Enthusiast model with a Clarion H/U. In my case, the Clarion’s H/U’s internal amp failed, and of course there would be no sound to the speakers.

That is probably what is going on here (but, I am guessing).

Now you have a great excuse to buy a decent H/U. If you don’t want to spend $$ for this, there are a lot of these OEM Clarion H/U’s sitting on garage shelves looking for a new home.

Gonna take it over to best buy in the morning, they said they would "look at it" for me. I might just have to pick one of these up on ebay. Do these radios have any lockouts/codes that I am going to have to worry about if I do a swap?

There is no lock-out codes that I am aware of. If the Best Buy team determines that your internal amp is dead, do not fix it (it's not worth doing this).

^^ That is a great H/U. I'm looking for one now. I just haven't found the right price yet. Also... You can exactly match the display-color to your Z's instrumentation (I think it's the amber setting).

Installed new headunit, however sound works only intermittently. Sometimes the sound will come on, but if I raise the volume to moderately loud (volume setting 21) the sound just cuts out and doesnt come back on. The unit is also running very hot. Any ideas???

Hmm… It sounds as though you have a short (power going to ground in the wrong place). Whatever interfered with operating your OEM Clarion is now affecting your new H/U.

You don’t have an external amp (Is that correct?). If you don’t have an external amp (I’m guessing, but my guess is based in your reported non-Bose configuration), it must be either a speaker wire that is grounding somewhere, the power wire or ground to the H/U.

To test your car’s speakers, disconnect the H/U from the car’s speakers and connect to any free-standing speaker. If that works, then you know the car’s speakers are the problem. If you don’t get sound to the free-standing speakers, it’s either a problem with the H/U, its power wire, or the ground.
