Considering sub upgrade: jl w6v2
Hi guys,
I'll start by saying that I already have a sub: jl 10w1v2. I listen mainly to heavy metal where there isn't much bass. Even though w1v2 has been working OK, I find myself wanting more. I found myself turning up the gain on the amp past 2V searching for decent double bass response and good background low tones...and my deck is putting out a 5V signal. I feel wrong about cranking the gain up like this on a 5V signal from the deck. This tells me that I may be trying to get more out of this entry sub than it is capable of delivering. I am considering upgrading to w6v2. I am currently powering my sub with Alpine's mrp-m500 so I think I have plenty of power to run w6v2. My questions to you:
1. What will I actually gain with w6v2? Will it hit lower tones? Will it hit harder? How is w6 better from w1?
2. I have a 10" zenclosure that goes below the strut tower, 0.75ft3. Will w6 fit? From my searches, it seems that it will.
Any other advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The w6 will be a vast improvement over the the w1. The w6 is a very good sub but there are many out there that will compare to it with a lesser cost. Stay away from jl yes they're good subs but people dont consider what they charge for recones and simple maintenance, they wanted $155 just because i tore my speaker surround when the part only cost $20, yes they replace all the moving parts for that price but i didnt need it. if you want my other 10w6v4 pm me ill send you pics of it on the dimm. Check out SSA's,lethal injections, diamond d3's or d6's, sundown sa's, re se's, DD's etc etc. they will blow away that w1 and be just as good or better than the w6

Does anyone know if d610 will fit in 0.75 ft3 zenclosure? Based on Zenclosure's site, most subs with mounting depth of 7" or less will fit. This sub has a shallow depth (5.6") but the magnet is slightly wider than what zenclosure quotes (6.5"). It seems that it "should" fit. It would be nice to hear from someone that has actually tried it.
It looks that I can wire a d610 for a 2ohm load by using the 4ohm version which is a plus.

What are you using to power it?
What signal level are you using from your deck? 2V, 4V, 5V?
How much gain do you have it set at?
What is your Xover set at?
What kind of music do you listen to?
What enclosure are you using?
Are you using EQ to control your bass?
Feel free to add anything else I forgot to ask. Thanks

OK, so I did some research and consulted with Paul350Z to clarify some of the things for me. Coincidentally, I came across another sub: Infinity 10DVQ. I checked the specs and this sub "looks" really appealing. I know this is bench listening but bare with me for just a sec:
1. Variable Q. You can change the Q setting by inserting a part into the sub which will ultimately change the Qtc value. This allows for some tuning once the sub is in without altering the box.
2. Above average efficiency: 90db. As Paul350Z pointed out to me, to get extra 3db out of a speaker, you have to double the power, all other things being equal. Considering that d610 has an efficiency of 84db, 90db seems like a substantial difference.
3. It matches very well with my 0.75 ft3 enclosure. Using the midQ setting, my Qtc would be 0.755 which is close to perfectly flat 0.707. It seems achievable to hit 0.707 with some box stuffing to make it seem slightly larger.
See some comparison numbers of Diamond D610D4 and Infinity 10DVQ below. Note: I calculated Vb by using my enclosure's volume of 0.75 ft3 and subtracting the displacement of each sub:
D610D4 10DVQ (midQ)
Qts: 0.49 0.44
Vas: 0.434 1.32
Fs: 40.0 25.13
Vb: 0.67 0.678
Sens: 84db 90db
Qtc: 0.629 0.755
It seems that D6 is designed to be in a small enclosure and likes lots of power. Infinity seem better on paper for what I am looking and each Q setting puts the sub below and above flat Q. As I said before, this is bench listening so results may vary. Ideally, I should find a shop that has both so that I can listen to them and compare side by side. May not be possible.

You made mention about listening to heavy metal that really doesn't have too much bass, since you already have a great sub in your possession 10W6 (dual voice coil). Since you don't require that much no point in really spending more money, correct?
I had a 10w6 and it was amazing (car was totaled), now running dual 8w7's and they're amazing. Save some money and just keep what you got.

The infinity is nice and by the looks of it it's pretty solid. I haven't had any experience with the infinity so I can't say much about it. I couldn't find the sub on any of the Manufacturers authorized dealers, but it goes for a good price at non authorized dealers. If you're fine at with non-authorized dealers save some money and get the infinity.
I'd personally go with the W6, but what ever you go with let us know!
(hope this was helpful)
