It might not be possible to install a Factory NAV after the fact.
Has anyone had this done or heard or someone doing it?

One of the biggest reasons to go with Factory NAV on the 2004's is the motorized door ... other than that, I'm not sure why you'd go factory? For the $2k it costs, you can probably put an Alpine (or other) system. I was thinking about investing in one of those Head Units that has the retracting 6.5" - 7" screen along with AV inputs. I figured it'll play DVD's right out of the Head Unit, and I can use the AV inputs for either a DVD Nav System (not sure this works, but I don't see why it wouldn't?) or a PS2/Xbox, or both.

Anyone have any thoughts on why this wouldn't work? I figure you can get a lot more bang for your buck this way. Depending on the HeadUnit you buy, you're looking at spending $2-2.5k I figure, installed ... but you get to keep your cubby hole and you can always take it with you if you change cars.

The In-Z-Car-PC is an option as well.

Many dealers say it can be done, but I don't see why not! The power seats can be added, I would imagine you could add NAV. Anyone w/ a Z and Nav could try and look to see if there are areas where the wiring harness for it can be interconnected!

Dealerships will NOT install a Nav system. It is only a factory option. To install one (screen, unit, gps antenna, wires, etc..) They would have to take off almost all the panels from the rear strut brace to the front dash.

I've install a PC and gps antenna where factory stock locations would be (small storage slot behind seats and gps antenna under drive's dash) That took me 2-3 days to put in. Figure Nissan's installers charge about $70 an hour for about 13+ hours min and you just tacked on almost 1K for install.

I'm not sure if dealerships can even order a whole Nav unit. Power seats are different, it just involves switching seats and pluging in the adapters (already prewired). I haven't seen (or heard) anyone getting this from a dealership (some did it themselves)

I have feeling that this is going to turn into the age old question on the Z32 boards. How do I convert an NA to a TT? The answer is take off the radiator cap, back up the NA, drive in a TT and reattach radiator cap. I believe that Konverter is right, I have heard again and again that there is a bunch of stuff (wireing etc) that is installed at the factory that the dealerships can't realistically retrofit. Its way cheaper to go with an aftermarket NAV system or PC.

IMHO, the factory Nav was designed to be part of the car. I am really **** about aftermarket equiptment that doesn't match a stock interior. (i.e. Orange speedo lights with a blue stereo).
I could have gotten much more out of an aftermarket setup, but it just isn't my style.

Installing the factory nav after buying the car is, if not impossible, at least prohibitively expensive and time consuming. If you want Nav and didn't get it the first time, your best bet is to get something aftermarket, by Alpine or Pioneer.

I would recommend this Nav unit. It includes, AM/FM tuner, 6.5 screen, DVD player, Navigation with touch screen and Voice activation. $1915.00 for everything.

You can't beat it for the price listed.

Local stereo shops want over 4K for this same setup.

Be advised you will be charged about $300 for the install

This is my next buy after my alarm install. Have to get a kitchen pass though.

I looked into it somewhat. I have the shop manuals on disk and have searched through there. It appears there is one wire harness that is specific to the NAV system. It runs from in front of the passenger seat (where the glove compartment should be) back to the DVD location.

I would imaging this is the wiring everyone is talking about. It would make sense that it isn't installed from the factory with cars that don't have NAV. (Less money for assembly)

I don't beleive, however, that the other harnesses are different. Designing two different wiring systems for one car would be a bad engineering call. (part numbers/paperwork trail/maintanance/etc.) Just leaving out one wire bundle during install makes more sense.

So, my fairly limited knowledge opinion is:

If you could get ahold of the wire bundle and the NAV equipment it could be put it, but I would agree that an after market system would be cheaper and better at that point.

Also, that system shown for 1900 bucks is nice, but you can get almost the same system -(minus) the DVD video playback (Pioneer 610T) for 1350. The first system requires replacing your current head unit. I myself am looking at the later because I like the stock look of my headunit.

edit: just re-read my post and the 'minus' part wasn't very well spelled out.

Well, it's 1380 on etronics (same link as above just click back to "car navigation' near the top. Or about 1350 on ebay.

Also, please see my clarification. There is no DVD movie playback (that I know of) unlike the 1900 dollar unit.

Okay, I am 2 years shy of my bachelors degree, can you explain,

DVD movie playback, you mean, for an extra $600 you don't get video playback?

Exactly what does that mean? LOL
Call me stupid!

Yeah, the 1900 dollar unit has a head unit, i.e. CD/DVD Video player built in, but you must replace your current head unit.

The second only has the DVD navigation unit, it will not play a DVD Video and does not have a head unit.

1900 = DVD Navigation and Stereo Head Unit with DVD Video playback

1380 = DVD Navigation
