Flush Mount USB Installed
What's up guys. I searched high and low for a nice looking flush mount for my USB in-port (if you guys know of anything I haven't seen please post here!) I did find one after searching for a couple days (not much in the way of options online for a flush mount USB port...)
So, I went the MORE DIY route and bought a Bell 12V Splitter from Wal Mart (http://www.google.com/products/catal...CAgQ8gIwADgA#p)
It disassembles easily with a little due diligence, and you can flush mount a usb port beautifully behind it by replacing the innards and just using the shell.
Another option of course is the ol' Drimel with no trim. You have to make sure your cut is exact to make this work nicely.
(Found this after searching forever: http://forums.jettamkv.com/viewtopic.php?f=53&p=52510)
Another option is Clarion makes a USB Flushmount that you can sometimes find on EBay for around $20.00, but it's a discontinued product as far as I know.
I got my idea from this thread:
http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/...und-power.html
He talks about taking apart a 12v adapter that has a USB plug on it and tapping the negative, positive.
I simply took the innards out of the Bell (easy by just unscrewing and popping some plastic), ran my USB extension cable through my console, pushed it through a hole I cut with the Dremel, and then glued the flushmount piece over the top of the USB port. Looks pretty darn good, wish the ring was a little more shallow but it's not bad.
Make sure you don't use superglue or something that will eat the plastic/paint up.
I will take some pics tomorrow when the sun comes up... only have a cell and the night is a no-go.
Let me know if anyone wants more info using this Bell, and if you try it let me know how it turns out! If you know of any other ways to flush mount a USB female jack, please share! Good luck!
Edit: Here's a nice Belkin to cannibalize for a mounting plate as well(kind of pricey though...):
