Default Anyone try a roof mount AM/FM antenna?

Hi,

I was thinking of mods I might try and the idea of shaving the current antenna mast completely off the fender and mounting a roof mount style antenna came to mind. Anyone got ideas for a good roof mount from maybe another brand vehicle. Right now it's like anything goes!

x2. Fill the hole and get a flat windshield mount antenna instead. Stick it up at the top of the windshield or hatch glass and you're good to go.

I think you're talking about those shark fin antennas? I wouldn't do it. Even if you're talking about a roof mounted mast like a VW......I still wouldn't do it. Bottom line is........don't do it.

At first I was thinking about the shark fin type just because it is lower profile. I don't really like them, but figured they "might" be better looking than the fender mount. Then I read on the Web somewhere that AM/FM does not work with a shark fin style antenna. They are mainly for XM, and cell phones.

Only vertical antennas really get reception well for FM. Even the window mounted in the glass type antennas don't work very well in comparison to an 18" vertical mast. Some of the sound shops I visited all said the OEM antenna was likely the best reception possible. Nissan likely did some homework on this design. The only other option I can come up with right now is looking for an alternative location for a power antenna, like the original Z's had! Can't do it on the 350 because the current location has no room. It is directly above the wheel. The old Z's had it just rear of the wheel well so it did not interfere with the wheel well.

I'm going to talk to an "expert" in automotive radio shortly and will ask his opinion. If the hidden mounts can get relatively the same reception as the OEM mast, I still might seal up the hole in the fender. If not, I may try to figure out another mount location for the retractable type!

i shaved the antenna...those antennas for the window suck...they are very staticky wherever u put it...i just listen to my ipod anyways...

I bought a used Z with XM installed and a Pioneer radio receiver. It had lots of static from the start. I had a local shop install one of the window blade style antennas on the upper right corner inside of my windshield. Didn't help. Changed the receiver to a Clarion, still didnt fix it. Not really sure if it's the antennas fault or not at this point..

Is it radio (regular or HD) that you need to receive?

Or/and do you need to have GPS and XM/Sirius reception?

For $20 I'd try this out......might be able to hide it under the 3rd brake light??????
