Looking for a new sub
So i currently i have a setup which consists of an alpine stereo, alpine speakers, a RF 500 watt amp and a 12 inch P3. I am almost certain that I am going to upgrade my P3 to a 15 inch sub . The reason why i figure a 15 over a 2nd 12 is because it would take up the same room and would most likely take the same power so instead of sharing a box with 2 subs, why not dedicate the whole box to one? I also would like to be able to hit some higher numbers, preferably mid to high 140's. So after doing some experimenting in the trunk, i can probably make a box about 3.5-3.75 cubic ft. I also did my research on subs and narrowed down my searches to what i seem to like. The choices are
1. Audioque HDC3 15
2. Fi BTL 15
3. Orion HCCA 15
4. RE Audio XXX 15
All of these i think are high quality subs and are worth the money. I am especially interested in the Audioque and Fi subs. I would also of course be upgrading my alternator to a power bastards 220 amp and eventually my amplifier once i can shell out the extra dough. If there are any other recommendations on subs (other brands or reviews) please let me know. And i am expecting some negative comments about putting a 15 inch sub in however try to keep it on topic and only helpful answers please
Thanks

i use a digital design 9515G 15"
you can do 31 " width max external
14" height max external
19" Depth external max
driver and port up yeilds the higest #
i am seeing 148-149 sealed up on the TL
159 outlaw on the audiocontrol
you will see 3 net cu feet after port and sub dispalacement
possible 3.25 net pending sub and port choice
what is your budget
were do you want your tuning
what music do you listen to
what amp
what alt
what awg wire how many runs
500 watts won't make any of those subs even move man sorry try to shoot for 2500 watts to start
you will need a new amp

i agree totally.
I run 2 10w7s, 1k watts mono, 10 farads, and 1 gauge wire.. stock alternator will be toast in a few months now im sure.. and sice its stock i mof course not making nearly full power... cant turn it up barely anyways... but yeah.. get high throw speakers versus a big #ss 15 my friend. The reality is that the frequencies that really put up spl numbers are NOT subsonic, and are in fact quite high in comarison anyways.. not to mention im sure you want to actually drive it daily and listen to MUSIC in it, not just sweeps and tones.

i have run RE MT which is an spl sub
i have run FI BTL spl sub as well
and i have run audioque hdc3 as well copper coil will sound better on music and the aluminum coils handle more power
let me know your budget and what tuning you want i think i can help you make the right choice
i have used almost every sub and box , and amp configuration in the 350z since 2006 geared toward spl

I was considering tuning it at around 35 hertz, this way i can hit those lows but i can also put up some descent numbers.
I mostly listen to rap/hip hop however i enjoy listening to rock and whatever else they play on the radio (except for country )
I was looking at the Audioque AQ2200D which with a power bastards 220 amp alt i think would be good.

Do you by any chance have a picture of your setup so i can get an idea of how it would look?
How does a 15 sound as compared to other setups you have had (12's, 10's) would you recommend one setup over the other?

i was considering doing a box that consisted of wood and fiberglass, the wood will outline the bottom of the car and the sides and the fiberglass inside the box as well as fiber glassing the top of the box. I dont know if i should just glass the inside of the box and make it out of all wood or what. A suggestion on that would be good.

if your not doing a solely dedicated spl enclosure than 3/4" mdf or birch , or trupan, just glass the inside so it is smooth , 1.25" baffle, all interior corners 45 degreed, , solid internal bracing , driver and port up, 35 hertz will do well on music and hit a tone at 42-47 hertz
i would recommend a 200 amp wrangler alt over the one you have mentioned
audio que 2200 is fine though i would get a sundown saz 2500 over that amp ( i am a sundown dealer hence i am biased ) though you can post a thread on any car audio forum and i think you will see i am correct

fi btl & audioque are more spl orientated than musical
fi btl handles more power than the hdc3 and sounds better on music
though both are a stretch for what i would consider a muscial driver
i feel a 12" driver like a btl or hdc3 or Digital design 12" g series motor , or sundown nighshade V2 12" will load better and get just as loud in the same space of a 350z , as the 15" in that space is on the small side
you are considering giving any of the above drivers RMS so a 12 will load better in that space
i use a 15" in a smaller box because it allows me to grossly over power it in a box on the 3.25'net side over a 4' net size
again if you are choosing the above drivers and running rms you may do better with a 12"
you can't even compare the RF p3 in 12" to what i am saying it is a whole different thing
so go with a 15" sub if you can see yourself feeding it 3000 + watts
otherwise 2500 or less do 1 each 12"
but it is close either way and box dependant

A HDC3 15 with a copper coil is 270 plus shipping from their website. The amp is 390 shipped from their website.
After some of the suggestions above i may consider a fi btl 12 inch in a big box and hope fully still produce some good numbers.

Thank you for all of your help. I apologize for not getting back sooner but i appreciate all of the suggestions. I recently had some other problems that need to be attended to first however i think when i do upgrade i will be going with the orion. It just seems like a solid sub. Thank you again

From what i saw they dont make wrangler alts for our car. Try powerbastards they're cheaper plus Ive heard good things. Im running an aq2200 right now make sure your electrical is up to par
