Default Need to place a 12" sub

I have a 12" Alpine Type R sub from my old truck that I'd like to throw in my Z instead of having to buy a smaller 10. If it comes to that I will, but I'd prefer to use what I have. I dont have the money for a fiberglass box, and I also dont want to lose my spare tire or a ton of trunk space. Cant find an under the strut bar box for a 12" either. Any ideas on how to build one in?

Looks like you might have to give in somewhere. Zenclosures has a 12" enclosure for a single sub but it does require the removal of the spare tire.

Or just buy a !0" sub and the under the strut bar enclosure that allows you to keep the spare in place. Or just build a custom, low profile box with your sub firing up towards the rear glass.

have a local shop built a box that fires straight up that sits under the strut area just a hair taller than the depth of your 12, shouldnt cost you more than 150 bucks.

but any 12 that fit in a truck... why would you want to retain it?

Well I've already got an amp to power it, slightly damaged though cuz I was hit by a semi in my truck, pretty sure it'll still work but cross my fingers. The sub surprisingly survived the accident. The box I had is WAY to tall to fit in the trunk of the Z ha. And by retain it do you mean keep it? I'm just saying I'd like to utilize what I have rather then to have to buy new equipment. I'll have to check and see if it can fit straight up and down under the strut bar, its a pretty deep mounting sub though so gonna have to check it out.

ah i see, its a type R, yeah those are decent. Id really just do a spare tire box for it. Ive never used my spare.. and if youre lowered or ahev a kit, its pointless.. the small size of the spare wont work w a drop and a kit.. that corner of the car would still be on the ground even w the jack out from under it ha.

The type r itself will never fit between the strut bar and the carpet of your trunk it's wY to deep of a sub.. Go to a custom shop and get a quote and what you want to do like give them some ideas and let them fly with it

if you don't have the knowledge i wouldn't recommend you building the box. it is one of the most important pieces to the puzzle. look up fishercustoms, or ramdesigns or some other well known builder. now if your going sealed then it's not as big of a deal.

Well unfortunatly a fiberglass box is not in my budget. They are so cool though! But yeah I def wanna go sealed with this one. I like a lot of bass, but having that in a ported box in my trailblazer was almost too much sometimes, so I think a 12 in a ported box in a Z would be more then I want.

Whats the point of keeping the spare

Lose the spare and get AAA

If you insist on keeping that useless tire lol.... Like a member said above... Have a shop build you a box... But to squeeze out the most space I would try and fit it between the strut and the rear plastic just take up the whole area of you have to .... It's not like the rearview mirrow is usefull in the Z anyways

MyLtWon nailed it on the dot! The box is the most important part of a build and can make or break the whole system.... But ... And I only say but bc you made it sound like your not looking to get the optimal sound our of your system.... You just want something to bump and that's all.... Right?

I wouldn't go with ditching the spare, but then again I swear I get more flat tires than anyone I know. I've had my Z since January and already gotten two flats.

I also am in the same position as you, I have a 12" Boston G5 from my previous car that I love and I don't want to ditch it for a 10" if I don't have to. Check out this link, it is a pretty explanatory DIY on fiberglassing: http://www.gadrivers.net/~dwicker/fiberglass.html. I found that if I angle the sub toward the centerline of the car and slightly toward the roof, I should be able to place it in the space between the rear speakers and the strut bar. I'm going to custom fab the fiberglass box to take up one half of that space with the sub facing out from under the bar. Two weeks from now I have a long weekend, and I plan on doing the box then, if you care to wait and see results.

nothin wrong with ditching the spare. depending on your mods it could be pointless anyway.

i never ever get flats and if i did the tow truck is a call away.

you can also get a nice 10" sub and get just as much output. which doesn't seem like you want a loud system? a nice 10" under the strut bar will probly satisfy the average listener.

I would agree with that, especially in that small of an air volume. Not to mention, you will get a tighter response. Find someone willing to trade you a 10" for your 12".

also go ported if you want some added ouput. this will increase the box size but a 10" ported enclosure should fit.
