Audio AND 350z newb here. Sub questions...
So I just bought myself my first "nicer" car after years of driving old escorts and corollas I bought myself a 2006 350 as a reward for my promotion at work. Now I would like to put some subs in it. I've only had the car about a month now. I had a professional shop install a Pioneer DEH-1300MP in it so I could play music through the car speakers since I didn't have the Bose audio and just needed something that I could plug my phone into. Now I would like to add some bass. I have about $500 to spend and just want something with some thump. I also kinda want to replace the stock speakers but it's not critical and I can do that later.
One of my friends is recommending I get a Kicker 12" L7 and a 1000w amp. I will build my own box. My questions mainly center around if this is the best I can do for $500 and will it fit with little modification to the trunk. Also what kind of box should I build? ANY links or info or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

While waiting for some responses, spend some time right here where you posted. There are lots of very similar questions asked before. Also spend some time here to see what others have done:

500 total costs in volved will not newt you a very good subwofer set up unless you win big on ebay.
car audio is not worth the upgrade unless you buy decent quality products. When ppl say they dont need it to win a car sound show or be super loud, your expecting that to be the result of spending just a bit more, or maybe say double the normal system cost, when that is far from the case. If you wanted to win a car sound off show, youd be spending 10k on audio alone.
SO, you need an amp, one that will fit in the car, and give decnet power off the existing alternator. Doesnt have to be huge, but it needs to be specific.
If you walked into my store today ( sniff sniff.. if i still had my store) , id reccomend an Alpine PDX 5 channel amp for you. Add it to your existing head unit. fits directly under your passenger seat, its exactly the size of a stack of printer paper.
its very well built, re-sellable, decent power and has all the stuff you need to make you car sound good, i promise you that.
It will run all four of your speakers and has a channel for a subwoofer.
NEW on ebay they are 389 bucks. figure 100 to have it professionally installed.
then when you get 200 bucks more, you can replace the truly horrendous 4 speakers in your car w some Alpine Spr coaxials or what not..
youre looking at maybe 120 for a decent zenclosure box, custom fit to the car... on ebay.. and from 100 bucks up to 500 bucks for a subwoofer of choice for you.
Keep the car light.. id say use a JL Audio 10w3.
Youll have spent a total of 1000 on your system and it will be absolutley ocmplete and will be a VERY nice system you dont have to send in for repairs, mess with, or babysit. It also wont likely atract theives.
If you came in and i sold you that stuff, youd drive off stoked as hell.
Read up, reasearch the parts ive discussed and im sure others will agree its a pretty solid base for our car.

^ This is basically what I did, with just a few minor differences, the most notable being that I disconnected the rear speakers. I was in the 1k-1.2k budget and couldnt be happier.

Serious. If I had to rebuild mine.. it'd go this route. Id keep my imprint and buy insane nice spkrs all around and wouldn't have to bs w all the wiring I had to do for my amps. Alas as w everything mine..I went w vast overkill haha.

you've got good advice here so far, check out this thread:

i generally avoid kicker and imo 1000 watts is a bit overkill in a small hatch running off hu power. jl makes nice stuff, also look at image dynamics idq. if you decide not to go the 5 channel route, look at the massive audio n2. the boys are right though, a 5 channel amp could make your life easier in the future.

If your budget is uber-tight, go used. Check out the my350z.com marketplace or Craigslist or fleabay. You can get much higher grade products at great prices (assuming the previous owner was reasonable with how he treated the equipment.) Make sure you see photos of the actual products before spending anything. Too bad you don't live around here, I've got shelves of barely used speakers, amps, headunits, etc. from previous cars that I want to get rid of, but I'm too lazy to box the stuff up and ship it out.

The 5 channel route sounds pretty good. What should I look for in a 5 channel amp? What speakers should I look for? And I would prefer to buy new, I will just buy in pieces over the next month or so.

I'm looking at some alpine spr-60c on amazon. Those will fit right? And I would need four correct? And I would then get a five channel amp. If I got a four channel amp, could I add another amp later on for subs?

correct. you would be fine with the standard spr-60 coaxial in the rear. i would suggest considering spending a bit more on your front stage. the sprs aren't bad, but there are better products out there.

people should list there goals first when asking for stereo advice.
l5-l7=junk. sq is awful and they require larger enclosures, they also don't get very loud.
a nice pair of quality 8" woofers will out do that garbage kicker and save you space.
