Default A few Audio Questions, Experts needed

Hi, i was just thinking about upgrading to a louder system in my car. I don't need anything too crazy, i was thinking probably just 1 10" sub and maybe some nicer 6.5s.

Anyway, i see a lot of people have crossovers and i have no idea what they do, could someone please explain them to me.

Also is there anyone on the forums here that has any audio hook up so that they get really really good prices? I've been looking on ebay and ive seen some pretty good prices, i was probably just going to get like an MTX 10" or maybe a PG 10" sub.

All recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks,
Alex

A crossover just splits the audio signal into bands: usually a sub channel (<100 Hz), a mid/woofer channel (~100-7000) and a tweeter channel (>1000Hz). A well set up crossover will route portions of the signals to speakers that are designed to best reproduce them. You do not need to buy one usually, since there are electronic crossovers built into many headunits and almost every amplifier has one.

Here are a couple of links to internet based sites. Both have a good selection and very competitive prices. I have purchased from both of them in the past:

1) http://www.cbrstereo.com
2) http://www.discountcarstereo.com/

As far as crossovers are concerned . . . when you purchase drivers (speakers), they will come with appropriately matched crossovers to separate your tweeters from your midrange. These may be simple passive crossovers as with some coaxial speakers or larger crossovers as with components speakers. Further, if you choose to include a subwoofer with your system, it will necessitate an amplifier, which will have a built in crossover for it.

Hope this helps.

Be careful, some internet sales sites do not offer a warranty and some even sell refurbished and not new parts. Make sure that you research what you are buying first...

do yourself a favor and shop at

www.etronics.com

I checked the others listed and none can beat the prices at etronics (I did my comparison with a kicker solo baric S10L5)

etronics - $98
everyone else....starting at 109.00

Etronics is awesome. Super fast shipping, great prices and good customer service. I got my home stuff there. They're my favorite. Be careful on EBAY. Read all the fine print. With that said, I was able to buy an $819 (Tweeter) head unit from EBAY for $450 (brand new).

I ended up ordering everything on ebay for outstanding prices. I got a JL 10w6ae for $160 shipped and a JL 250/1 amp for about $230 shipped. I also got a smashing deal on exhaust on ebay, Injen SES angled for $680 shipped.

Dont worry, i read all the fine print, ive been doing ebay for about 4-5 years i believe, basically since it came out and i was only like 14 heh.
