Default Infinity Speakers - Kappa or Reference? More...

I am finally ordering my stereo parts. I need some info on speakers.

Based on reading this forum (and personal experience with Infiity speakers) I want to go with Infinity 6.5 speakers. My questions are:

What is the difference between the Reference 6002i and the Kappa 62.5i?
Which should I use?
Should all 4 speakers be the same? (Why or why not?)

Lastly, what spacers will I need.
(2 will go in the doors and 2 in the rear)

Background info: In case this stuff matters, the install is a 2004 350Z Roadster. I am going with the AudioLink PD4 Adapter and cables from the stock Bose head unit. that will run to an Alpine 4x50, 4 speakers, and a Basslink in the stock spot.

One of the main differences between kappas and reference speakers can be heard: the kappas have a higher "ceiling" when it comes to "highs". I would recommend kappas for the front to enhance sound imaging, and go with references for the back to even out the soundstage...the references are closer to a mid-range speaker.

For myself I'm going with 6.1 Perfects for the front and kappas for the rear powered by a JBL/Crown 75 watt rms per channel at 4 ohms. The reason I'm going higher on the sound stage is due to running two JL12W6AE's on a JL 500/1 within a ported box.

Hope this helps,

i would not put rear speakers in.. turn the stock ones off... i have kappa perfect components at all four corners and it is wastefully IMO.. i have the rears turned off because it definitely sounds better with all the music coming from the front. ..

get the kappas up front and put an amp on them.. you will like it i promise

That makes sense (and that is one setup I have seen (refs in the back)). I can see keeping the highs up front for imaging, but I definetely want something in the rear for fill. Thanks for the reply.

dont bother with all 4 speakers...spend the extra money to get the perfects up front...they sound awesome. and they can definitely manage keeping up with some heavy bass (if given enough power at least). If you're looking for a place to get them i got mine off sounddomain.com for 215 by getting them to price match a site i found on yahoo shopping. couldn't beat that deal.

I'll chim in with a sound engineers opinion. I concur....loose the rear speakers. Your imaging will thank you. Spend the money on good front seperates and good sub.

Is going with no rear speakers applicable to the hardtops as well as the roadster?

I also have perfects at all 4 corners and a sub in the hatch. When I fade all the music to the front, it sounds way too, well, way too forward. I currently have the fader set to +4front; they way most of the sound is coming from the front, but there is enough backfill to raise the soundstage up off the floor.

I have often found that rear fill is a matter of personal taste. I am one who really likes rear fill in my car. On my last car, I tried just running high quality speakers in the front (Diamond Audio), with clean amps etc., and even after a month, I was annoyed at not having the rear sound. So I went down and spent $100 at the local shop for some 3 way 6.5's. I was then a happy camper. But ultimately, I dont think the rears need anything super high quality.

I purchased 4 Infinity Kappa 63.5is which I installed myself. For the front speakers, I used the grill covers as spacers. They fit perfectly, and the speaker does not hit the window when it's completely rolled down.

I hear what your saying about filling out the soundstage a little bit. I may leave my stock rears in for a small touch. What the heck, I can always dial them out.

in my research,
1. if you are music fan: no need for rear or cheapest rear to fill up space.

2. if you are movie fan: components for front, ok level coaxial for rear.

3. if you are fan of stock bose: go to h*ll with stock bose.

I am a HUGE music fan, and I need rear fill. It is more an issue of dramatics and feel for me. In a traditional home stereo system, sound originates from the front only, but it has been my experience that the sound does reflect off the rear of the room, thus enveloping me in sound. In a car, the front speakers point towards each other, leaving a lack of audio in the cabin. The rear fill makes up for this in my case. You seem to be implying that a real music fan does not enjoy rear fill. You could not be any further from the truth. Not only do I enjoy music, but I play it, and I engineer it from time to time with studio equipment, so I do not seem to fit your 'stereotypical' mold.

I went ahead and got the Infinity componants for the front and the coax for the back. (Ican always dial them out if I perfer front only.) I'll be getting them installed next month. I'll post results.

I have 63.5s in front and 62.5s in the back. I bought all of them from Ebay for about $200. For the front, I use the front stock speakers as spacers.

Tony, how do they sound? Are you still using the stock head unit?

With the stock unit, the Infinity speakers sound much clearer and more sound stage. But you have to crank up the volume. It seems the like the head unit does not have enough power to drive the Infinity. Don't forget to disconnect the tweeter connection. I plan to replace the head unit with an Alpine one soon and also install a JL amp.
