Smile Front Door Component Install - pics

Hi everybody, not sure if it would be of any use to anybody but I've been able to gather so much info from this forum I thought I'd try and give back if possible.

I just did a front speaker installation on my 04 Roadster and took a few pics under the door panel once it was all finished up. I forgot to take pics of the tweeters in the sails (doh!) and after buttoning it all up again I'd rather not take it apart. Hopefully this helps somebody out.

The speakers are Infinity Reference 6030CS component speakers which I've had in the past. I think they sound great and are a great bang for the buck. They fit well with a 1" spacer (a little caulk for a nice seal) and the tweeter surprisingly fit under the stock tweeter bracket no problem. Held it in nice and tight...stock look, no rattling, no modding. Keeps me happy.

I mounted the speaker a little bit lower in the wood spacer since the top of the grille has the faux speaker holes while the bottom is free and clear. It's mostly located around the bottom of the grille anyway and I haven't noticed any muffling which is a bit of a relief. That really is a terrible design. Glad to see it wasn't an issue.

I used a bit of super-strength indoor/outdoor double-sided tape for the crossover. I wasn't sure if it would be strong enough but figured I'd give it a try. Dear god...it's strong enough. No worries there. I used a bit of caulk on the corner as well since the door panel dips down a bit I couldn't stick it directly on (flat back on the crossover). I figured if it prevents a rattle here or there, perfect...if not, a little extra caulk never hurt anybody.

Sounds much better. Still more for me to do. I have a Kenwood Excelon DNX8120 that I installed which is keeping me happy for the time being. Next on the agenda is my Alpine PDX-5 5-channel amp, Infinity Reference 6032CF rear speakers and a JL 10W3v3 in the SRQ custom enclosure (sub and enclosure still to be ordered).

First time working on a Z and I have to say compared to my last car (Scion tC) it's a lot tougher. The Scion was pretty much made out of legos with enough room to hop into the dash and work on the wiring...the Z, not so much. It's much more...dense.

Anyway, thanks for all of the great advice on here...it's helped me get as far as I have. I'll keep plugging away and hopefully get it sounding up to snuff asap.

Have a great night.

Tim

PS. Here's a link to the rest of the pics...mostly similar but just in case they're helpful.

Looks good! The only thing I'd recommend would be to spray paint those MDF spacer rings to seal them against the elements. They're in a part of the car where the back ends get exposed to moisture. If you know anything about carpentry, you know that MDF turns to mush when it gets wet.

You know, I had thought about it and intended to do it....and then finished the job without thinking. Since it's all buttoned up and caulked in there I'll probably leave it for now, but I think I may have to replace it sometime down the road and will definitely do the sealant thing.
