Default Look! No hands!!! :)

Okay, I posted something on this awhile back and now I have the full details... for those who would like to know about easy and somewhat cheap handsfree cell phone installs on the Z...

I'm getting a Sony Ericsson T616:

this phone has Bluetooth capabilities (which is wireless handsfree... you can have your phone anywhere in the car (like in your pocket or gym bag, etc)... and the system picks up the incoming calls and can make outgoing calls from which you speak to and from the speakers in your car.

The Bluetooth car system (Bluetooth™ Car Handsfree HCB-30 ) costs $199.95

There is also an additional music muter (Advanced Music Mute HCE-16 ) you can buy that automatically turns off your music when a call comes in to make the system fully functional

The installation is about $100 for the simple install, but I have an installer here in Chicago who thinks he can by-pass the DVD Nav system and split the functions so that when a call comes in, the Nav screen will show the caller as they are registered in your phone book and the number. The DVD screen will also show your entire phone book and you can scroll threw it to make a call using the multi-direction toggle that comes on the Nav system. I don't know how much this will cost yet as it will be a custom install, but I'll keep you all posted.

I hope this is helpful for anyone interested.

Awesome. I have a T616 and have been considering the Bluetooth kit. Looks like a winner to me!

I looked at something very similar, but I was trying to figure out if I could get a motorola v60 to work with the nissan stereo like the v60 works with mercedes (its pretty freakin awesome, you can even "speak" the phone number to it to dial). . .

I was considering doing an installed hands free system, but I personally want to do it to a boom mic mounted behind the driver that I can extend from the seat (sounds bizarre, i know, but there's TOO MUCH in car noise for the classic "top of the pillar" style mic to work right. . .

Once you get this setup, I'd like to hear where you placed the mic and how your voice carries over the car/road noise to people on the other end.

Good luck!

Oh, one other thing - are you trying to say that the bluetooth hands free kit will output video?!??!? That seems really unlikely. (perhaps I'm just a pessimist...)

That install from Chiago is either very optimisted or just lying. I check on sony-ericsson's site that hands free unit and it only transfer audio. It doesn't show Caller ID or phonebook. You need another unit for that (Bluetooth™ Headset HBH-200) and that has no video output.
What connector is on that unit? is it an antenna spliter or pinout connector? Don't think the stock HU can use a pinout connector cause they don't take input (can only do it thru the antenna)

I'm not sure how it would be accomplished... what I'm going off of is the BMW 5 Series ability to display the caller information on the NAV screen in the car. The 5 Series uses Bluetooth... so there must be "some" possibility.

My wife uses HBH-60 headset and SE T616 and she loves it. I have a SE P900 and a Motorol HS610 headset and I love it. Handsfree is the way to go but having it installed just in your vehicle is not too useful for me. I would like to be able to carry my headset anywhere I go, not just when I'm driving. Like your system, I am able to voice dial, receive calls, with a touch of a button. When the caller is in my phonebook, my headset actually say who it is.

It's kind of cool though having your nav screen integrated with your phone. Let us know how it goes.

Yes, but with the equipments you listed, its not possible. The bmw system is different, it has audio and other hardward to 'download' phonebook and display caller id. But, sony-ericsson, currently don't have anything like that for the car yet.
Didn't want to say it, but I'm 'researching' a solution, which I hope works.

I have both the t616 and the car kit. The phone is a piece of junk but it has bluetooth so I use it. The kit works wonderfully. no video output. you can have the phone output audio if a name is assigned in your phone book. I put the car kit in myself. took about 2 hours. so $100 is steep. but I also use to do car audio for a living so I may be slightly bias. Besides, I would never trust someone with disassembling my dash other than myself.

I'm in the phone biz. I've used every phone available on GSM. the 616 is horrible as far as reception. The menu is S L O W. you get so far ahead of the phone. the display is horrid even though it's suppose to be 65k. And the fact that it's not a flip makes the buttons tiny. those are my gripes. the new line they have coming out corrects those issues. z600 and v600 I believe are the new S/E phones.

What carrier are you using? reception depends more on the carrier than the phone. I still get good reception indoors, where my other phone didn't. Also the t616 has a firmware upgrade (R1B027) which shows the reception better and therefore keeps reception stable. It also speeds up java and menu. Yeah buttons are on the tiny side, but the phone has voice dialing. You can use that instead of dialing.
