Default Question About Loudness

Hey guys, I want to get this sub box from Wicked Cas. I'm not too fond of the carpet look from Zenclosures, so I'd rather go fiberglass...

This box is designed to fit 3 JL 10w3v3's. I was thinking about just getting this box and subs, but my problem is I really know nothing about audio. I don't care at all about competing. I just want something that sounds good and has a good thump to it. The important thing is that I want to be able to listen to music comfortably without it being too loud. Of course I'd like to turn them up, but I'm not always going to want it that loud.

For example I'd like to be able to turn them down (But not off) to the point that I can have a conversation with somebody else in the car. Is that going to be possible with a setup like this, or is it overkill? Can you have subs like these and still play them at comfortable low levels? As for the amp, I'd like to get all JL equipment, but like I said, I don't know that much about audio. If I have to get a lower powered amp so it's possible to set the subs at a comfortable level then I'll do that. Could anyone help me out here?

EDIT: One other question. I'm not sure if I want to get the amp tray in this picture. If I did, I would imagine I'd have to take out the spare tire. My issue is I have 20" wheels, so I don't think the spare tire is doing me any good anyway. Does anyone know if it's possible to fit a 20" spare in the trunk with a low profile tire, or should I just remove the spare? I don't believe I can use an 18" spare with 3 20" wheels.

Have you ever had a non-factory sub in your car? even a moderate quality sub, properly installed and powered, provided MUCH more bass than ANY factory system.

I only have an 8" sub in a small sealed box in the stock compartment in my Z, and it's plenty of tight bass in such a small car. check out my thread on JBL -62C

I actually enjoy the sound more than in my other car, a mid/large size sedan, with factory headunit and speakers, but a 12" Polk SR124 sub in a custom sealed box in my trunk (spare tire compartment), even though that system has more bass, and the capability to shake the entire car.

I haven't been in a Z with three 10's, but I'm thinking based on how much bass I can get out of a single 12 in my large sedan, and how much I can get out of a single 8 in the small Z, I'm thinking its OVERKILL. Unless you like the look, etc.

I'm also thinking a setup like that could be a thief magnet, as you can't really hide it in a hatchback, ya know what I mean?

I did have 3 10's a long time ago and they were too loud, but somebody else hooked them up and I didn't know how to adjust them. This sub box is mainly for looks. Maybe I could just unhook 2 of the subs and only actually use one of them.

As for being a thief magnet, I'm getting a body kit, wheels, carbon fiber hood and other goodies put on, so it will already be a thief magnet before I even get to the subs. I've been thinking about getting one of those GPS trackers in case it was ever stolen so I could track it down. Haven't done any research on that though.

Maybe the wicked cas 10" corner box for a single sub? Would def fit ur sound requirements

Guess it depends how much u like the look of the one u posted. It's ur car! Do what makes u happy to get in it every day!that is a lot of extra to pay though if u r only going to run a single sub, and I don't think a monster stereo adds much to resale. It's ur dime though!

I was thinking more along the lines of getting your hatch window smashed and ur subs/ amp stolen than the actual car. A lot of it depends on the area u live and work and usually park ur car. Garaged or not. Parked outside at night etc

Spare shouldn't matter. Our cars (mine at least) has a space saver type tire

Bolt pattern and outside diameter of TIRE (not wheel) are what matter

The spare is only to limp home on. Or to the nearest discount tire....

Three is definitely over kill. I had 1 JL W3V4 and it was way louder than all my friend's 2 12's inch subs. 2 really high quality JL audios are loud enough as is but 3 is just if you want to show off IMHO.

Hmm, I never thought about them smashing the window. That does concern me. Although I live in a good area, who knows what would happen elsewhere. Do you think I would have the same problem with the Zenclosures rug type box? It blends in more and is more stealth I think.

I just don't know if I would get the single or double 10's. Double looks better in my opinion, but it all depends on whether I could set them to normal levels or not.

Ok, I decided to just get one JL 10w3v3. I'm going to get a JL amp also, but I'm not sure which one to get. In my search, some people have said 250/1 is underpowered and 500/1 is overpowered. Maybe somewhere in between? Does anybody have any suggestions? I see a bunch of different models like HD, Slash v3, XD and JX on JL's website, but I'm not sure which one is better. Could you please link me to a good JL amp for that setup?

I have a JL XD 600/1 powering 2 10" W3's in a Zenclosure and it pounds. I wouldn't say over kill but it's more than most people need. I love it

What does that second number after the forward slash mean anyway? Does it have to be 1 or does it not matter? I was looking for something between 300 and 500 and found a 400/4. Would that work, or is there something better? JL's graph on their website for the 10w3v3 shows 500 as the danger level, so I wanted to go with something below that, but not too low.

/1= mono amp

/4=4 channel amp

You could use other amps for a sub,but you really just want a mono amp.

Ok, I've decided on the JL XD300/1. If anyone can think of something better, just let me know. I'm not ordering it until later in the day...

EDIT: Before I do this, do I have to take into consideration any other speakers I might be getting, not subs, but replacement component speakers for the front of the car. Does the amp effect those at all?
