I just received my CCD Backup camera from ebay & wan't to make sure I wire it correctly. I read about people taping into the light green 12v+in the trunk but where do I wire the negative end of the camera?

You can tap the 12V- wire on the camera into any ground you find in the area.

Now that I know my camera works fine, If I wanted to add a switch to turn the backup camera on anytime how would I go about doing so?

 

You're welcome. I've has a similar rear cam for about 2 years, and it's a nice upgrade to have. These LED back-up lights make for a nice combination:

You'd want to find a source of constant 12V+. and install a switch between it and the camera's 12V+ input. But, unless you install a diode in the system, whenever you turn on that manual switch, your backup lights will come on with the camera.

 

Hey guys, I just received that same camera, and I don't know if it's just me but when I installed it in the license plate lamp position it fits pretty well BUT the lens is too high so the image shows the plastic in front of it. I mean, the top half of the image displayed is useless because of the lens been half behind the plastic. Any idea or suggestion? Thanks

 

Sounds like maybe the alignment of your bumper is slightly off. Maybe you can trim a bit of the plastic near the lens? Here's a closeup of mine:

Thanks for your response dcains!!! I manage to "solve" it by inserting some plastic tabs to force the camera to look down a little bit. I will take some pictures as soon as I can of the final result for your approval or advice guys, thanks you very much

 

Wonder if this will work with my Pioneer HU.... I would like to have this just so i can see whos behind me

 

Actually I installed the camera with mi Pioneer HU (AVH-2450BT) and it was a straight forward installation beside the little problem that I mentioned above (but that's just my case I guess )

I found some guides in the DIY section here and a very detailed one for the exact same camera on another forum.

 

Do these turn on automatically when you go in reverse or do you have to use a switch?

 

The cam is powered by the backup light circuit, so it switches on when you shift into reverse. Of course, you can wire it to be manually controlled, if you wanted to.

 

It turns on automatically when you go in reverse. The HU should have a reserve signal wire that you will tap on your reverse light positive wire. This way when you move your shift **** to reverse, as lights turns on, the HU will detect that signal and switch to your camera.

I powered my camera by taping it to a constant +12v accesory wire in the original radio plug behind the HU because I wanted to use the rear view function on my Pioneer HU any time that I want. If I would have powered the camera with the reverse lights it wouldn't work in "manual" mode.

 

You can wire it to work both automatically with the backup lights and by manual control, by using a small diode to isolate the 2 power circuits from each other.

 

Hate to bump an old thread but for all of you with reverse cams, are you using the purple wire from behind the HU?

 

Most headunits' reverse in wire is purple with a white stripe. Some Alpines utilize an orange or orange/white wire.

 

Today I found out the camera does work, even if the purple wire isnt connected. Only thing is, it has to be manually turned on for it to work.
I ran the wire from the radio to the trunk today but all I need to do is connect it. I started craving Korean BBQ and I left it for tomorrow morning haha.

Bump for this old tread, i have a quick question so I am trying to wire up my rear view camera but I am using a Kenwood DDX 770. My question is for those of you that have the camera wired so it works when not in reverse, how did you accomplish this? I would like the ability to be able to have the camera turn on when in reverse and also be able to access it when not in reverse. Any help would be appreciated.

 

Use accessory power to power up the camera. There should be a button on the 770 that you press and hold to bring up the reverse cam image at any time.

 

Any other time besides reverse is basically useless unless you want to be distracted while driving.

But yeah just wire it to an accessory cable instead of tapping into reverse cable.
