Which Size Subs Performs Better, 8" or 10" ??
I am ready to add two subs under the stock speakers behind the seats. I was looking for two 10" JL subs. But was been told by one of my friend that 8" subs performs best for smaller area. I am not looking for window shaking sounds. I just want decent music with a nice bass. So is it true that 8กจ might best suit me?
Also, any recommendations on which JL sub models I should get?
Thanks!

in my opinion the 10's would be perfect for the z...but i had 1 JL 12w3v2 installed in the hatch area in front of the strut bar and right behind the seats and it sounds fantastic. nice solid and deep bass. it makes the hair on your body shake!
If you want clean, tight, accurate bass you might want to consider a pair of 8" drivers. 10" drivers aren't bad, either, though. Once you start to get up into the 12" range you might start getting the loss of accuracy that often comes with large, heavy-coned drivers.
I'm guessing most folks around here are simply into loud, car-shaking bass at the expense of accuracy, so you'll usually get recommendations along the line of bigger-is-better. To each their own, I guess. If you don't care about the neighbors hearing you down the block, I'm betting a pair of high-quality 8" drivers would provide *plenty* of bass.

Anyone know which JL model for 8"?

I'm in the process of making a custom enclosure to house a JL 8W7 powered by a JL 250/1 amp. Normally I wouldn't consider a single 8" woofer, but this sub is impressive. I'll post my opinions of how it sounds after it is installed.
Can anyone here comment on the JL subs and their boominess? I listened to a couple different models (don't remember which models they were) in a couple of cars at a big get together we had once. They were certainly loud and certainly shook the car, but they seemed pretty boomy.
A friend of mine works at a local car audio shop which carries JL, so I asked him about this. He said that JL subs are nice, but they are definitely a boomy speaker.
Anyone else noticed this? Yay or nay?

I have a JL 10W7 in a fiberglass box under the strut tower bar, facing to the rear, powered by the 500/1 JL sub amp, and it sounds great. It isn't boomy at all, but I suppose it could be if I set up the crossover that way. The W7s are extremely accurate, but can play excessively loud and retain a vast majority of the accuracy too.
I do know that lots of "boomer" type installs use JLs, so it must be all in how you set it up.

i have 1 jl 12w3v2 in a custom box under the strut bar hooked to a jl 500/1 amp and it sounds fantastic. i dont think it's that boomy, now if you listen to rap that has deep hitting bass, it could. mine is configured for rock but sounds great with either type.

Which direction is your 12 pointing? Just wondering cause by pointing the 12 towards the rear, it would be "blocked" by the rear brace/stiffener.
thanks
Go with audiobahn subs.. they are the Bomb! I used to have a single AWT10x in my 240sx. It sounded easily like 2 12"ers The thing was phenomenal! You will need a large amp, but it was the most accurate subwoofer I ever heard. Sold it to a freind, but I think I might buy it back.
I've got a JL 8" w3v2 driven by a 250/1 JL amp. That one sub is perfect for the bass that I'm looking for. It sounds very crisp and accurate, and still provides decent superlow booms. It's perfect for the avid trance lover such as myself.
People that say 8" subs sound tighter than 10" are full of it. I installed stereos professionally for 6 years and heard alot of different cars. There are so many factors. As far as tight bass all you need is a quality amp with a good damping factor with enough power for the subs its running. Okay, 18" speakers are not tighter than 8" subs, but they can be just as tight provided you give them enough power. Okay sorry, I'm done.
Keep in mind there is nothing wrong with running a single sub. I would prefer a single ten in lieu of two eights unless you are thinking of putting them in an enclosure under your strut tower brace. As for the sound difference between 8" and 10" subs 10" will usually have lower extension, but often you don't notice in a car due to cabin gain. I would just recommend that you listen to both subs in you car. Usually good retailers will let you try out their subs in your car (especially if you already have an amp installed.)

Larger numbers typically mean higher performance levels and more power handling. Classes are 0, 1, 3, 3v2, 6, 6v2 and 7 for subwoofers. When a "v" is present in the model number, the number following the "v" is the "version number" of the driver line. Example: the W6v2 is the second version of the W6 driver line.

z_coaster.....yeah the box slants/faces towards the rear of the hatch. the strut doesn't block enough of the sound to make a difference. because it's hitting the window and coming back so it makes for a nice bass sound. i have no complaints with it. although i wish i could hear what the jl stealthbox sounds like.
but where the box is it really fires right before and over the strut bar.
