Errm the model of Z i got was enthuiast..... and yes there was a very big improvent. It has good bass and it sounds really clear now --- I have yet to amp them too.

I have noticed with many component speakers, that they can often sound very bright ... to the point of hurting my ears with rock music. Have you noticed this phenomena with these? Are you using the stock head unit?

I got Infiniti Reference series - as far as the high tones hurting the ears yes they are capable of this. however i just use the setting on the stereo to get rid of this. I turn the trebble down and adjust the built in equalizer - no more hurting ears for me - at least not from the high tones.

oh i'm running a Sony CDX-M800 Deck.
