Sub cover badge
I'm in the process of replacing most of the audio system in my 04 Z, and have decided to put a Kicker sub in the stock sub location. My Z did not originally come with the premium sound system, so I ordered the sub cover panel from CZP. Since I'm putting a Kicker sub in there, and not a Bose, I thought it wouldn't be right to leave the Bose badge on there.
I designed a replacement badge with a Kicker logo on it and had it printed up at Shapeways.
I printed the badge in both black plastic and black stainless. In the pic below, plastic is on the left and steel is on the right:

I decided the steel looked better than the plastic, and after a little paint, it looks like this:

Just felt like sharing

I know, but that's just the way I am. *I* know it's back there.
Do you realize just how exciting it is to be able to 3D print almost anything you need? We live in exciting times!
I spent 20 minutes knocking that up in 3D, $14 having it 3D printed at shapeways, and 10 mins throwing a coat of paint on there.
If I had wanted to create a new badge for my sub cover even 10 years ago (When my car was built, incidentally), I would have been out of luck, short of re-purposing a badge from something else or hand carving it out of plastic.
I have 3D printed all kinds of things. I printed some custom parts for a plastic model I'm working on. I printed a new side wall for an electronics project box so I could add a serial port to the project. I printed replacement handle caps for a retro computer that was built in 1985.
I can't believe people don't get more excited about this. The technology is advancing so fast, and the prices are coming down. In another 10 years, you will be able to 3D print new body panels for your car and recycle used parts into new printing material.
You have to understand, when I was a kid, I used to dream up all kinds of cool stuff that "people in the future" might be using. This was one of those things I imagined them doing, and here I am doing it, which is something I never imagined. I have become those "people in the future" I used to dream about.
