Default NAV compartment depth?

I just got done cutting the Carbon Fiber NAV compartment plate by Reen to accommodate 2 52mm Autometer gauges along with my Wideband O2 controller and I have run into a slight problem. The problem is the depth of the Wideband controller which is about 6 inches. I removed the non-NAV equipped "box" in the center console and I discovered that there is another piece of plastic right behind that. Behind that I see that there is another piece of plastic. The first piece of plastic right behind the NAV box looks like it can easily be cut. What I do not know is what is behind that. I suspect that it is a heating duct. Does anyone know?

just ran across this thread...

I have no clue what's back there, but if you haven't found anything out yet, try PMing some of the hard core audio guys, or maybe the in-car PC guy. They rip the dash apart all the time.

It was asked in another thread, I think the shop manual said that HVAC stuff, piping and whatever else. inother words, not a good idea to cut it.

I would be amazed if something 6" deep fit there.

can you part it out? like open the casing, and leave only the gauge, and extend the connections to the bulk of the hardware so its mounted somewhere under the dash.

Ares, that is what I ended up doing. The digital display is now separate from the controller. I may need to get another CF plate from reen since the hole that I cut for the original display is slightly larger than the new display.

If you end up needing another plate, I'll cut you a break. You're the pathfinder here -- just post a bunch of pix when you're done so we can all learn from it!

I plan on posting pics of the process and final install once I have everything I need to complete the job . The biggest delay now is the Pillar Pod which I will hopefully have in the net few weeks. What kinda "break" can I get on another panel. You can email me at robreffner@earthlink.net. I may not need a new panel if you can recommend some type of "C" channel that I could use around the opening that won't look too bad. The new display is only slightly smaller than the original.
