Need help choosing components
I want to swap my Bose system for something better but can't seem to decide which components to go with. Since I'm on a budget I don't want to spend more than a grand for my speakers (front and back) and the amp needed to drive them. I was thinking about putting components on both locations, but can't seem to decide on the speakers though, I was thinking about getting either the Alpine Type R components or the Diamond M661 comps running a JL 300/4 amp to them. My musical preferences run from hip-hop, rock, to techno so don't know which would sound better. What do you guys think...any inputs or suggestions???
First off, the Diamond M661s are not very good. The Alpine type Rs are horrible.
I believe a JL 300/4 runs $350 or so (please correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a long while since I looked at pricing) so that leaves about $650 left to spend for your front speakers. I say go with some Boston Pro 6.5s (woofers in doors, tweeters in kickpanels) and a set of Boston 5t neo tweeters in the stock location (set to ambient play) with them bridged across 2 channels. You'll have an amazing front stage that will blow you away. Those should cost about $550 or so. Take the other $100 and take your SO out to dinner
. Trust me, the Z has no need for rear speakers if the front stage is done correctly (or if you are running video).
If you have to run speakers all around, god forbid, run some Boston 6.5s up front and some rally RC620s in the rear. Or you could run 2 sets of Diamond Hexs. I believe you can get them for about $300 on some sites now a days.
Honestly though, I'd forget about rear speakers and put it all up front, it's worth it
.

Brickyard Rat, nice audio setup...how do you like the JL components. Haven't heard alot about JL comps mainly good things about their subs. Wouldn't mind those comps if they sound pretty good.
LS350Z, i was thinking about some bostons for the fronts only but we only got one boston dealer in town and he currently only has the rally series comps in stock. Might wait to listen to the boston pros once they get in next week.
Anyone out there using the infinity perfects or the nakamichi components? They were selling me either of these sets for about $200 but don't know how good they sound.

LS350 is right on the money with his suggestions, but I'm assuming the remaining $$$ will be spent on the installation. If you can find a good dealer they should be able to take care of you for under a grand, installed & out the door in under a day.
I also agree placing 95% of your emphasis on the front spkrs, if done properly with enough power, balance, and positioning, you should have an outstanding sound stage. Also, I highly reccomend getting a 4 guage install kit, and installing a split fuse box where ever you install your amp. That way, if you want to add a subwoofer amp to that location, the power wire will already be there - then you just gotta add a crossover and you can upgrade to a system + sub in about 20 minutes!
Enjoy,

I have also been told that the Diamond M6's are a terrible speaker, and that te M3's are actually better/cheaper. I have the Hex's and can't say enough good things about them.

Kappa Perfects are amazing... I put them up against my buddies MB Quart Q's and he liked the Perfects because the highs weren't piercing and the sound was smooth. I'm running them without the X-over right now since my DEQ-p9 takes care of all my x-over needs. I have the woofers handling about 100 watts and they're very happy and very, very loud. Let's see... what else... If you run them w/ the x-over they actually beat pretty hard for being 6.5" mid range speakers... don't push them too hard though... oh and don't push on the dust cap... the aluminum is thin and will dent... trust me, i know... it sucks... but whatever

) and I've only had one problem (one of the speaker terminals broke from overuse and it was replaced, free w/ no questions asked). Boston has a lifetime warrenty which is really nice. Also if you do choose the Pros, let me know before installing and I'll show you exactly what I did with mine including tweeter location and tweeter settings (I have 2 sets of tweets which is worth the extra money). Trust me, if you grab the pros get the 5T neo tweeters as well.
Pefects are okay speakers but you'd be better off with JL, Diamonds, or Bostons. The Nak components sound fairly decent but are a pain to find.
