Default Request for anyone removing their door panels soon...

I would like to know what the hole cut-out diameter is for the speaker in the door. When you pull off your door panel, could you pop out the speaker and measure that real quick? It would be a tremendous boon. I'm debating which speakers to get, and it's going to hinge on what that hole diameter is.

I'd like to pick up a set of Dynaudio 240mkII speakers, but they have a cut-out diameter requirement of 136mm. (Perhaps a little bit less after using a spacer, but not too much less.) On the other hand, the Dynaudio 240GT set uses a much smaller basket and thus has a much smaller cut-out diameter of as low as 88mm. I'd prefer the 240mkII set, but I want to be absolutely sure they'll squeeze in there.

the diameter is not a big concern, the whole cutout is huge.. but the depth is rather crappy. .. the window is just behind the factory speakers.. so anything deeper and you are into making custom brackets.

Yeah, I'm definitely planning to make a custom spacer. Just cut a ring out of wood, I'm guessing. I just want to make sure that the speaker basket will fit into the hole. From what you're saying the cutout shouldn't be a problem, so that's good!

I should have mine off in a week or so.

You may not need to make ur own spacer if these will work:

Interesting. Not sure how much lift will be needed, but those are handy. I'm just curious how the same spacers can be used for 5.25" and 6.5". (And for what it's worth, the Dynaudios are 7"!)

I just got a pair from crutchfield. Should be here in the next few days. I'll let you know how they spec'd it for 5.25 and 6.5.

Most people on here recommend a 1" lift. But I also heard about the speakers sticking out too much and hitting the stock grille.

In any case, I got my dremel ready for some liftring resizing.

Dremel... tool of the gods. (I'm guessing one of these days I'll have to go get one.)

Update: The lifrings from crutchfield do not work. I think it is meant to upgrade a 5.25 speaker to a 6.5 cutout while lifting it 1". I blame crutchfield for poor description on the product.

instead of buying spacers, just use the factory bose speaker as a spacer. there have been several posts about how to do this. just cut out the factory speaker and you are left with a spacer that is perfect for a 6.5. then you just screw the new speaker into the spacer with the screws provided with your aftermerket speakers. i did this yesterday for a set of Infinity kappa 60.5cs components and it worked perfectly. hope this helps

Good idea for those using 6.5" drivers. I'm using Dynaudio 7" drivers, though. Regardless, I'm not really worried about the spacer. A simple wooden ring is extremely easy to make and will do the job perfectly. My concern is the hole cut-out diameter.

Good idea zachcrosen. I am gonna install the same set of speakers next week.

As for jreiter, if you don't mind till next saturday, I should have the cutout diameter for you by then. Let me know if you need any other measurements.

Here it is. Looks like the door opening is 5 1/4".

BTW, becareful when putting the factory spacer back onto the door. I stripped a screw by tightening too hard.

Thanks 'oaktown350'! I have a set of Dynaudio 240mkII speakers, which need a cutout of 136mm. Looks like that Z-hole works out to about 133mm (5.25"). Ugh. Hopefully it will work out. The 136mm Dynaudio requirement is up at the base of the speaker ring where the basket is at its widest, but the basket tapers off slightly as it goes down (although not much). With the spacer pulling it out a bit, hopefully the part of the basket going into the door will be small enough to fit. Gonna be tight. But I guess that's the risk I take when using a 7" driver.

You're welcome. I think you'll be alright. If you are using the stock speaker as the spacer, that'll be your limiting factor. I suggest you make your own. Having that stock piece in there made me feel like my system is still somehow tainted by the blose. hehe. good luck!

Yeah, I'm planning to make my own wooden ring (perhaps MDF) as needed. That's the problem with the Dyn speakers: non-standard sizes. They pretty much require that you do custom installs. Worth it, though.

For those folks who used the stock speaker spacers, I ran into a fitment issue with the stock grill. What did you do? I cut out the ribs and sanded it down a little but it wasn't enough. I can't figure out how to get any other type of grill in there. The only way I can think of is to sand down the stock spacer as best possible but maybe someone has a better solution.
Using Infinity 63.5i's.

i dremel'd away the part that was hitting the door panel. Do you have complete speaker clearance before putting the stock grill back on?

What do you mean "complete speaker clearance". I didn't try to dremel the speaker itself but did the grill as far as I dared. Still couldn't complete the fit though.
