Default Build My system!

i have a G35 and got the bose system. Not to happy with the sound so going to change it.

What do you guys recommend? i am leaning towards MB quarts and a couple or one JL sub. I want a nice clear sounding system with some base, nothing to extremely loud bass wise. I saw a JL 10w6v2? kinda want to get the best bang for the buck, i dont really want to spend a huge amount but i dont wanna go cheap either.

I would like to have an idea of what i want before going into a local shop and having them try to sell me something i dont need. Any info would be great thanks!

Best thing to do is go down and listen to different brands. It's all preference. It also depends on what's available locally and budget.

Personally, I'd go with Boston Acoustics components, JL 10w6v2 and Xtant amps with Clarion head unit.

Just check my sig...lol

My two bits, you should also keep in mind that for cost-effectiveness, JL subs and Quart speakers are not necessarily the most efficient speakers on the market. Check the speaker's sensitivity ratings before you consider buying them. That'll tell you how big of an amp you need to push 'em. It's all about the combination of components you select, IMHO. Just make sure you hear the speaker and amp combination you're considering played together. Couldn't agree more with stu46 about listening to different brands. Everybody's hearing is so different that what sounds good to one person could sound like to somebody else. Must admit stu, if I had the cash to redo my system, I'd probably select the same style components you've got. LOVE the xtant amps! Hope that's helpful, 703z.

Got hooked on that combo when I heard 2x600.1 into 2 JL 12w6v2. Two words...Holy Crap! Now by brother has a 600.1 into a JL 13w6v2 in a civic hb. It's just crazy.

Also, from what I've read, Zapco amps and Focal components kick major butt also. Just no local dealer in HI.

mmmmmmm.... poooowerrrrr..... power is gooooood....... Yep, never heard a Zapco sound bad with anything. Ditto with Focal's and Dynaudio's. Big key is getting 'em into the doors! Typically require a bit of fabrication to get 'em in wth the door window clearance. I'm putting mine in over the long weekend. Decided I'm just gonna cut up the crapy stock Clarion's and use the outter basket and mounting hardware as my mounting bracket. What'd you do stu? BTW, my old a$$ Fosgate amps may just give your gear a run for its money. I'd never buy any of their new crap, but their old stuff I'd put against the best amps made today. Truthfully, I'd only ever replace them if they gave out on me. And it'd be begrudgingly at that...

I'm a network engineer.

Old RF stuff was bad a$$. I also liked the old soundstream ref 400 with some orion xtr. i've never owned any rf, but what i've been told by my friends, they drain the battery pretty bad.

Here's a link to some pics of my car in progress....

703z,
I know what you mean by now wanting to buy what you don't need but, after a while, it's not loud enough. More bass.....At lease that's how I was/am.

Best thing to do when picking out speakers is to take down a cd that you know the songs inside and out. Listen to it for a few days and know what sound comes from what side. Then pop that in when picking out your speakers.

enjoy

What would be ideal is if you could listen to the components you like IN the car.

Speakers, etc. sound very different in the car compared to what you hear on the sound board at the stereo shop.

Try finding someone with the stuff you think you'll like already installed and try to get a listen from them.

I also agree with stu, listen to something that you KNOW what it is supposed to sound like.

I like to use stuff with good vocals, e.g. Sting or Sade.

Oh yeah! I'd seen that! Man, wicked install! If I could live without a spare, I'd do the same. My system's not for display, more stealth for personal enjoyment. You do all that yourself? Excellent craftsmanship. I used to install professionally, with custom fab as my specialty. Have you taken the DB meter to it yet? Agree about old Soundstream reference stuff. Definitely wicked, and not for the faint of heart...

703z, stu's right. Only recommendation I'd make is that you close your eyes when you're testing the music in the car (Not on the road, dude!) and at the audio store. Know it sounds cheesy, but I always found that this technique helped me to really focus on what I was hearing and to pick out the crispness of sound around you. Less distraction to your brain allows for greater focus. Just give it a shot...

The system they put in my car ROCKS! In fact, it hurts to listen to it loud, but it is so tempting to crank it up because it sounds so good.

Eclipse competition H/U
MB Quart Premium components in the doors
MB Quart Premium coaxial behind the headrest
(2) Memphis 10" subs
Memphis 1000D amp for the subs
Eclipse 5342 amp for the MB Quart's

I can listen to this setup at ANY volume level and it is as clean as a whistle. I guy from work has a db meter he is bringing in next week so we can measure how loud it is inside the cabin. But let's just say, when it is cranked up, the air movement inside the car will move your hair around.

If you want a tight clean bass that hits but doesn't roll or get mushy then check out Memphis. If you don't believe it is good, look up the results from various stereo competitions and see the subs/amps the winners are running.

I listened to the Memphis components and coaxial and they did not saound as good as the MB Quart Premiums, but their Sub and amp are awesome.

Here is a picture of the subs, leaving me plenty of room in the back. Look at how they molded the sub box to fit the contours of the car.

Memphis makes some pretty wicked subs. don't remember the model #, but I know it has 4 coils. People are pushing 4x1000 watt memphis amps, 1 to each coil, and hitting ~168db. And that's only 1 sub. The mounting depth is around 19", it's huge!

Not to mention how small their amps are also. Their 1000 watt amp is just about the same size as JL's 500/1. Plus it's perty.

My guess is you're hitting around 135 - 140 db. Depending on a few things. Is it sealed or ported?

Well...It started out in my truck as a stealth system. I had 40/20/40 seats, so I took out the middle and built a box that looked like a center console. Had the sides wrapped in carpet and top in vinyl to match my interior. It was a sweet setup. Couldn't tell anything was there. Then I bough the 350 and it's all downhill after that. I figgure with a car like this, why not show it off? So, back to the drawing board.

A stereo shop is doing all of the work. My friend used to install for them so he hooked me up. the guy who owns the shop is originally from cali. He moved here a while ago.

I might take a meter to it today. I'm very curious. the guys at the stereo shop is estimating around 147-148 db. Not too bad considering the box barely meets specs and it's sealed. I had 2 Xtant 3.1 pushing 2 jl w6v2 in my truck and it was A LOT louder. It was stupid loud. Not as clean as I'd like it though. so I decided to put another 3.1 and 10w6v2 but go sealed this time. the bass is TIGHT. I'll post a new thread when I take a meter to it.

My box is sealed, and the 10's didn't need that much depth, but the 12's did. As you can see from the box, it leaves me plenty of room in the back for groceries.

703Z, what have you decided to do?

Hey Stu. Just realized what the 'I'm a network organizer' comment was about. I'd asked 'What'd you do?', not What do you do, referring to the install of the door speakers. Question still stands, what'd you do, fabricate, slim speakers? And just for the record, I'm a financial analyst...

Default Plans

Oops! I had a 50/50 chance and guessed the wrong one.

for the door, the BA Z6 doesn't fit nicely. The mounting depth is too deep. The door panels will be fabricated. With what type of material and what it will look like, I have no idea yet. I do know that it will also be painted to match the rest of the work. I've got ~2 weeks at the drawing board because the painter is on leave and won't be back till begining June.

The doors are kinda weird because the passenger side has a handle and the driver has a cup-like handle. So when you open both doors and look at it standing behind the car, you get a different picture for each door. For the trunk, that wasn't a big problem (the trunk isn't symetrical.) The outter line is hidden by the amp rack.

If you or anyone has any ideas, post em. Or you can PM me. I'm thinking that I'll follow the line that runs along the middle of the door. Above the face of the speaker, all the way back. So around the middle of the door down will be Silverstone. Not sure if there should be a design ie. ghost flames etc.. Should it go all the way back? I guess we'll see.
