Default Gutting the Stock CD Player

This may be a stupid question....

From what I gather, the stock head unit sucks.

So, is there any way to rework the insides to boost its performance, but keep the appearance of a stock unit?

I'm not a radio guy so I have no idea really in what makes a head unit perform poorly. I'm looking to upgrade, but I tend to hate the look of most nonstock head units.

Thx!

No real way to modify the internal amp of stock units but you can add an amp to the factory unit with Hi-lo level converters that sends the signal to a better amp and allows you to upgrade you speakers and get better sound. If you want better sound quality from the stock unit still get an rca line output amp which is like 29 bucks from a Bestbuy and it will send the signal from the stock head to 4volts which is the same signal from a high quality alpine.
