installing rear camera
I am installing a back up color camera in my z.
My headunit is the Kenwood 7015, and I have it set in the HU settings, to switch to the camera automaticly.
I have it wired into the reverse lights.
So when the car goes into reverse, the camera comes on.
Problem I have is this.
It shows in black and white, not color.
I sent the camera back to be checked, and they tested it on 2 screens, and it was in color.
So it would seem that it is either the way I am wiring it, or the HU settings
I tried wiring the camera 2 ways.
I connected the 2 video wires together (yellow from the camera, and yellow into the HU)
And then there is the camera power.
It came with a dc power cord. Tried plugging it into the wall, and also cut the plug off, and wired hot to the reverse lights power, and the ground side, to the other side of the reverse lights.
Neither worked. Only shows in black in white
Others have this HU working with a camera in color, so I know it displays in color.
I tried this camera through a cheap tv I have, that has built in rca jacks in the front, and it displayed only in black in white...
I contacted where I purchased this from, and they stated
to use camera with the monitor which has the standard video input impedance level of 75 Ohms. If in any case your monitor is not set to high impedance mode, please switch the monitor standard impedance position. If the monitor has not the impedance adjust switch, please ask technician or installer for a camera suitable for your monitor.
If this level is not met you will get rolling picture (like if you hook up to your TV) or black and white picture but as I mentioned there should be switch on the source how to change the level.
I don't see any settings in the HU for changing input setting, but the spec show it as 1Vp-p/75 ohms, so I should be fine.
Can anyone think of why this color camera is showing up only in black and white ?

What kinda of camera did you buy? I have the 7015 also, and want to do this same mod. BTW, are you going to make a DIY tutorial? If you are, can you email it to me. Thanks <M>

I was asking for the kind to look up more technical info on the specific camera.
Personally I would just return it and buy a different one, if you tried 2 different video sources and both showed black and white it sounds like a problem with the camera.

They have also sold many, without complaints of b&w

Hey ACP .... Like some of the preceding replies, I'm also interested in installing a Reverse Camera to the Kenwood 7015 HU. Please keep us posted on your progress. Tutorial/Photos, and materials would be greatly appreciated.

Pat, I did, tired hooking up the camera, right to the Kenwood connection as well, no luck, but thanks
When I get it back, I guess if it still doesn't work, I will bring it to a local stereo shop, and test it on some screens there.
I am set on this camera, because I already have the hole drilled to fit it
jazz z1
I will, but it is pretty straight forward
Plug in the video of the camera, to the video in on the Kenwood
The power cord has 2 wires (if you get one with a plug, cut off the plg)seperate,
ground - negitive side of the reverse light or to ground
power - wire it to the + side of the reverse lights.
Just use a inline tap connector.
Set the Kenwood settings AV-IN to "Auto" and AV-IN Name to "R-CAM" on page 72 of the manual
Auto is so when the unit receives power from the video in, it switches. So when you put your car in reverse, the screen switches to the camera. When out of revese, it switches back to the screen it was on.

I'll add to your problems ACP - I installed my playstation to my 7015 on the week-end and I too only had a black and white picture. I haven't thought anything of it as I just connected it to see if it would work.

Thank you for replying.
Ok now why is this happening ?
Here is a picture of an F-150 owner, that installed a different camera on his, and it is in color, so the unit does display in color with video input
Did you hook up the left and right audio as well ?
I know it sounds like a weird question, but just trying to figure out something we have in common.
I obviously didn't use the audio cables with my install.

test the cam yourself, get a 12v dc 300ma power supply, plug the camera into a stereo or aux input on your tv, and see how it displays, i have mine hooked up and never had any issues.

This is not an issue with just the camera (which I don't have in my possession currently) but also with a playstation that Perth 350z tried hooking up to the 7015 as well..
