Default Problems hooking up Xbox

Not sure if anyone else has seen this problem, but when I hook up my power inverter no matter if I clamp it to the battery and ground it to the frame, or use the cig lighter the video comes up wavy and the sound buzzes. If I run the xbox off an extention cord it works fine. I have a 400 watt inverter, and the inverter works fine in my friends 99 GT. Just wondering if theres something with the 350 that causes this or what.

Mine does the same thing, I think it has something to do with the Xbox's power supply, I'm using a pure sine wave power inverter, and that still didn't help

Did you guys try grounding the xBox? Open up the xBox and you should find a black or blue ground wire. Attach that to any grounding point (ie chassis).

Have you actually grounded an xbox like that, cause coming into the xbox is AC power coming out of the inverter, so it would't seem like the xbox needs to be grounded.

I grounded my xBox it upon install so I don't know if I would or would not have noise but...in theory, what you get from the inverter is not a pure AC sine wave. You only get AC from a household outlet. The inverter converts DC to AC by modulating a DC square wave as close as possible to look like AC.

I heard that some power inverters cause this... I use a power inverter from vortec... it's red and comes in a blue package... I think I got it at the local best buy... just hooked it up to the battery... and I get no screen noise...

How much did that cost? Or did you do it yourself?

I wish, i would have saved myself around $2500. I spend around $6500 but I shopped around a lot, bought a lot of my stuff off ebay and took it to the shop rather than buy most of it from them. If I would have paid retail i would have spent over $8000

Ive tried a Vector 400 watt which gives a lot of noise, and I also have tried a 140 Watt Radio Shack inverter and it still gives a good bit of noise. Both give noise with the PS2 and Xbox. I havn't found a person to know how to correct it, I'm guessing it just depends on the wiring in your car and the type of inverter and, may depend on what kind of screen you have also. Im not sure if you can buy a DC power supply for an xbox, I'm starting to look to see. I know I've seen an add from Joytech advertising a xbox car adapter, but it looks just like a power inverter. I havn't found anyplace that carries them expect walmart in a whole Xbox portable car package which comes with a screen, adapter, and case for $200 bucks, and I dont feel like spending that just to find out it still gives me noise =\.

don't really think you need a 400watt inverter... I have a vector and I have absolutely no problem... no grounding the xbox or whatever... are you putting the inverter right by the screen? or near the screen? that might cause it if the inverter creates a magnetic flux lines... same thing as a cellphone by a computer screen... mine's in the glove box in the back...

Either the inverter is too close to the screen, as mentionrd above, or you have a bad ground connection, How did you ground it? Did you connect it to a ground wire or to the frame. If you connected it to a wire, you may not have a great ground, Try sanding off a little paint and grounding it to the body.

I have tried putting the inverter under the drivers seat, and also in the trunk. I have tried different grounds, when I hard wire the inverter, and when I use the cig lighter adapter I still get the interference. Where do you exactly have your inverter, and where is your 2 guage wire grounded? Maybe I'll try the same setup and see what I get.

are the people getting noise hardwiring into the cig lighter? If so this may not be a good idea. You get noise from the cig power supply from the ignition system. Some companies make shift lights that just plug into the cig lighter..lol. Others that may not be getting noise may just have a better inverter. MY suggestion is to run a new power wire from the fuse box and ground it off the chassis with the shortest wire possible.
