06 ZR install done :) CEO Style... quite technical
alright guys, just got done with CEO350z's 06 roadster, i have to say, this turned out to be one of hte most technically challenging builds i have done in a while. I sorta shot my self in the foot with the design i came up with but it turned out okay
goals:
1. nice sound quality, able to rise above the wind/road noise with the top down while on the high way yet remain controled and clean
2. A clean and neat display for amp and subwoofer
3. Trunk must be kept completely clean
4. add rear view camera, and dvd player into the mix...
anyway lets get started:
upfront is an pioneer avic-d2 nav unit, note hte remove bass controler sunk into a new panel taking place of the stock slide out tray and the rear view camera in action
the gps atenna comes out on top on one side, while the IR eye for the removely mounted dvd player comes out the other side, this way, full control of the dvd playe5r can be had by pointing the remote control forward
to get the volume needed for the ZR, we decided to go with TWO PAIRS of the new DLS ultimate UX26 6.5" component coaxials. these are no slouches, each essentially a DLS ultimate component set built into a coaxial configuration. and they sound just as good one set was installed into a set of door pods, while the other set was install into kicks.
each outter door panel was heavily dampened:
here is the rear view camera, just a stnadard bolt to the license plate deals, no cutting, no drilling no glue
now onto the main attraction, and why this install was challenging for me. I decided to show off the INSIDE of the subbox via a plexi window. well, this require a normal square box of sorts to be built wiht the inside angles nice and clean, it also meant i have to figure out how to secure this box so it sits level in the stock location....and to figure out how to display it properly after much cursing and trial and error, i figured it out.
An image dynamics IDQ10 sub sits in a .5 cubfeet sealed enclosure on the driver side, I molded the factory bose cover with a window cutout so i can look into the sub box through a piece of plexi.
note also the DVD player flushed into the slot that used to house a glove box.
on the other side, the factory cubby was glassed, painted and acts as an amp rack for a DLS ultimate A5 3 channel amp.
and here htey are upclose and personal
flip the center switch and the plexi infront of the subbox as well as under the amp lights up white, high lighting hte logo on the subbox. since its brightout, its hard to tell...
so i gave it a crappy shot at taking it inthe garage and putting it in night mode lol
all in all, i think we acheived our goals, i just took it for a spin with the top down, we can deifnetly hear it loud and clear above all ambient noise

To the OP: I have to say thats one of the cleanest stereos I've seen. I'm not a fan of bling at all really, I dont like big subwoofers in the car or any crazy neons etc. But that setup is perfect, I have the D2 and I want a rear view camera, and I want to house a custom box just like that one into the stock bose location. I will be contacting you shortly for information on this stuff. Great work BTW!

maybe you know something i dont, but arent IR viewers SUPPOSE to be visible so you can acutually control the dvd player using hte remote? i wasnt aware that the IR goes through solid plastic? just curious yeah the rear view camear is a little bulky, on the flipside it doesnt require sticking to the paint or drilling, whcih is not bad...but ieasy to swap out if i find a better solution later on
p.s. i didnt mean to say you are wrong or get defensive, but merely inquiring If you can think of a better location to do the IR eye, let me know, i have no problem with putting it elsewhere if it still works well and is out of sight

Hey Bing,
Looks great, as always, does adding the two coaxials/components up front increase the front stage and loudness significantly? Maybe I should order a set of your pods instead of installing my second pair of Polk SR's in the stock location behind the seats.

the stock locaiton relaly isnt all that bad, adn i find it is one of hte best, if not the best locations for a sub in a converbile, but the stock METHOD sucks, of having to bolt a sub to a plate, no real enclousre
having a second speaker upfront increases output, but not really staging or imaging, for best staging and imaging, stick to a single pair upfront but in a ZR, volume is more cricitcal
