I just found this thread, and I am glad I did. This is a great tool. I'm getting that AI dash kit for my DDX-512, it looks damn good.

So this is what it looked like today..


Trimmed off some of the stray strands...


Trimmed some more..


Finished trimming, ran some sandpaper over it..


The large flat spot on the back wasn't quite strong enough, so I threw a couple of more layers on it... There is a reason I have standing up against the wall..


And its because I had some spare resin in that batch that I didn't want to waste.. So i poured it into this seam to ensure a seal.


I don't have a lot of confidence in the fleece -> MDF joint so I pour resin into any of them that I think are suspect.. Thats it for today!

I had a question about the amp rack you made and installing it behind the driver's seat I saw that you secured it with the plumber's strap, but did you secure it any other way? Or did you just lay it on the bottom of the floor? Thanks and awesome work on your custom boxes!!

UPDATE 5/2/08

Well, we are coming into the home stretch now.. The lease on the garage I am working on ends on Monday, so I've got to be done, cleaned up, and out of there by then.

But enough about that.. I know what you guys want -- the pics.

Here is what it looked like..


Trimmed and sanded..


The large flat area was still not strong enough for me.. If I put all of my weight on it I could feel it flex a little.. So now what? Bring in the 3oz matt.
This stuff is THICK.


Cut out a piece of the proper size, tear the edges so it blends in better..


Resined into place..


And now cured... I realize this picture looks almost identical..


Definitely strong enough this time... sanded over completely..

Started sanding this part...


Edges needed a little more work..

A few more imperfections to take care of.. so in comes the spot putty. This part will be painted, so its getting a lot of attention. It will be flat black and semi-hidden, so it doesn't need to be perfect, but you guys know how i am..


Thats it for now.. Might get some sanding done tonight if I don't drink too much

yo sintaxeror, I've been following this thread and I was going to do what you did to your door speakers today. I cut out the spacers and set them up. it was all great until I tried to run the speaker wire from the door to the cabin. You made it look so easy.

I have a few questions for you.

How did you get the darn connector open to run the wires inside of it?

How did you control the dremel when you were cutting the hole in the connectors? There was a lot more plastic and pins than I expected there would be. There was also veryy little room to work.

Finally, I've got the Kenwood ddx512, the little brother to yours, and I was hooking that up today too. I thought I got everything wired up, but when I tried to play a DVD it wouldn't play the video. It needed the parking brake wire hooked up. Where is that wire at, and did you connect it up so that you can watch a DVD while your driving?

I found it was a lot easier to get your fingers in there to get the connector out if the door is half closed.
No trick here... just make sure you have the right bit and be really, really, really careful. I have read post from people who screwed this up and they seemed to have a lot of screwy problems.
I can not condone watching DVDs when the car is in motion, that would be illegal. Make sure you don't ground the green wire, or you may accidentally watch a DVD while the car is in motion. This wire is supposed to be hooked up to the parking break.

Sanded the glazing putty...


Mounting holes are a little tight..


A little dremel action, and she fits snuggly.


Juuuuust enough clearance..


Missed a spot..


Time to tackle this side..


First coat of bondo..


Partially sanded..


Completely sanded..


Second coat of bondo...


Sanded..


Cleaned up any big imperfections with some glazing putty..


Sanded again.. my arm is sore.

I sprayed some primer on it just now.. pictures tomorrow. Almost looks like a sub box, eh?

Thanks Jay, I got the video on my head unit to work. I'm going to hold off on the speaker install for now. I need a break before I try to tackle that again.

The enclosure is looking good. I can't wait to see it wrapped in some vinyl.

What are you using to sand it flat? Do you have flex blocks or are you hitting it up with the drill attachment?

I used a regular block on the entire mid section of the back.. the sides and corners i used the drill attachment to get rid of the rough stuff and finished by hand.

UPDATE 5/4/08

Whew.. I just cleaned out that garage. I have to return the key to it tomorrow... but you know what that means kiddies.. I am almost done!

Here she is primed..


And painted flat black..


hmmm..something like that. I bought WAY too much vinyl... so if anyone needs some Allsport 4-way stretch black, I am looking to unload some.


Stretched and stapled.. didn't bother with the contact cement this time since the shape was more simplistic.


Time to fill this hole..(thats what she said?)


Some liquid nails to seal it.. (as a side note, has anyone noticed far one container of liquid nails has gone during this entire build?)


Terminal cup installed..


Cleaned up the excess, then drilled the holes for the subs. The top hole was tricky and I accidentally rubbed some paint off.. so here she is getting a quick touch up..


Had to stop here..was getting late and I still hadn't cleaned that garage. Tomorrow it will go in, finally!
