I am stoked about trying this Vo, I ordered the speaker cloth from PartsExpress, thanks for the tip!
Now I just need someone to help me (AKA someone to do it for me haha) run speaker wire through my door looms. That job is enough to make you kill yourself...

Cool man, good luck. Partsexpress carries just about everything you need to build an audio system, and cheap too!
When I ran my wires, I said screw the loom. I drilled a hole right into the frame of the car down by the kick panel, then installed a rubber grommet there. Made my own dang entrance...

Mine turned out great, am more than happy, and the sound is much more clear. Then again, I installed new speakers and amp, so I never got to sample the blocked vs. unblocked with my previous set up. The only little issue is that parts of the grill edge stick out a bit. Maybe the grill cloth is preventing it from seating properly... more investigative work is in order.
Oh, and running speaker wire through the door molex = nightmare. Got it finished, but damn was it a b1tch. My advice: start with the passenger side first.

Reviving an older thread, but thanks for the idea! Just finished mine at the end of my component install. As someone mentioned somewhere in this thread, I went to Target and picked up a black light weight synthetic shirt for $7. A little dremeling plus some hot glue and I was done in 30 minutes. Looks fantastic! Thanks!

I'm not sure I like the fabric as much as the factory grille, so I'm actually in the progress of drilling out each hole. Got the drivers side done now I just gotta get the passenger

Finally got around to removing the stock BLOSE subwoofer, laying down some Dynamat and making the grill covers:
The fabric needs to be pulled in little tighter which I will fix when I dynamat the doors before my new speaker install.

Absolutely, I did this awhile ago before I ever saw this DIY! What's the point of getting new nice speakers to cover them up again!
Anyways, addressing the "kick in" problem... I actually covered the hole with a metal mesh (I got it from a collander/strainer) from the back and then covered that the black fabric - I kick it all the time with no problem.
