Personally I order from a local supplier who brings stock in directly from the manufacturers in Japan. Not that I've ordered a lot so far.
With my previous car (Miata, I ordered a lot from FlyinMiata in the US).
Shipping isn't really an issue once you know what to expect and is usually cheaper than buying locally.
I still order a lot of stuff from all over the world as it's cheaper. I recently spent about $250 in shipping on books from Amazon. Same books here would've cost me $400

I'm in the middle of organising a cheaper method of ordering parts form the USA. I've been talking to Simon at ttzed.com and he's OK with starting to stock Z33 parts besides his current Z32. Getting smaller, less costly parts is a pain because of the minimum shiping costs. As an example, I was looking into getting a Stillen Mesh Grille from StrictlyZ at US$107 which is reasonable with the exchange rate, but UPS shipping was quoted at US$240, more than double the cost of actual item. So as you can see, you have to plan well to save on money and get a lot of things at the same time.

I think a big part of the issue is that the shops who do stock stuff get hit by big shipping, duty and tax bills and so have to pass that on whereas doing it yourself you can either keep the price down and avoid the duty and tax altogether or at least minimise it.
