Default Nismo Flywheel on my nismo z

Took my half a day off to get the nismo flywheel installed today...

Here is my quick review about how I felt on the way back to my work from N1 distributor in Clayton.

1. Yes... Noise is there!!! at around 2000 rpm in any gear. the noise is a chattering noise and sounds like something is loose at the gear box. I thought they didn't tightne something properly, so I went back to double check all the bolts and nuts are secured. The chattering noise isn't that loud actually and it can be controlled by the throttle. If you don't depress the gas too hard, you cannot hear it at all under normal cruising. And if there is a noise, that means you might need to downshift for more power.

2. Engine braking is a lot less now when I downshift, it makes the car a lot easier to drive IMO. Also the clutch catch point is a lot clearer and the guy who installed my flywheel has ORC flywheel/clutch in his car (even lighter than nismo) and he is amazed with the nismo flywheel's acceleration.

3. The acceleration is A LOT.... I meant A LOT faster, you can definitely feel the change before and after! I haven't push the car all the way yet because it is pretty wet today... but there is a slipping if I give more throttle.

I will post few pictures later on from my installation when I go back home tonight!

It is worth the money and the time to get that installed! I guess I will just need to get used to the new "noise" and the shifting feeling is a bit different at 5th and 6th now.... most probably due to the gearbox was off the car.... not too sure... the gear isn't that clearly defined as before...

Anyone know how to get that fixed (the gear problem)?

cheers,

richie

SORRY GUYS.... here is the BRAND NEW IMPRESSION!!!

1. I would like to correct from my first impression.... there is NO NOISE AT ALL at the lower rpm.... not a single noise that I can hear.... and why did I say there was a noise?! because there were 4 bolts weren't tighten up right at under my geear shift which holds the squarish alum. frame down...

2. The gear shift is still precise as the installation wasn't that great on the gear shifter area.... By re-position the gold ring under the gear shift, it makes the gear shifting a lot more precise! Well... you might not get that clearly by what I said... here is the example.... the gold ring can be adjusted to either far left or far right... by making it to far right, you will not have 1st and 2nd gear at all and by making the ring sitting at far left, you will not have the 5th and the 6th.... so I reposition the ring to be at the center and here you go.... precise gear position is there!

3. Impression.... the REDLINE gearbox oil makes my gear shift even better..... slick.... no hard shifting required as before...

4. The nismo flywheel makes the car feels really really light.... took yawpt for a drive and he was amazed on what the car can do now... also he was quite surprised that the nismo exhaust is that loud compare to Hi-tech exhaust...

5. I can DEFINITELY say that this is a really good mod that EVERYONE should go for.... and I can say... this is the BEST mod on my car so far..... I cannot stop smiling now....

6. Oh... did I mention that it is so easy to change the gear? and the clutch catches so precisely as well.... easier to get the friction point (my friend drove it and he loved mine one compare to his ORC clutch/flywheel on his Z).

cheers,

richie
ps. pics are coming!!!

Here is the picture of that gold ring.... if you need to re-adjust the shifting position... also the aluminium ring (with those loose screws) is sitting on top of the rubber cover.... and those screws go into those 4 holes shown in the pictures.

Nice Richie. Thanks for the writeup and pics. Sounds like a very nice mod.

I agree with the Redline oils. Had them in the tranny of my last car and made a very noticeable difference.

I tried my best to listen for the noise... the noise is there, but VERY VERY VERY minium, you really need to try hard to listen to that over the exhaust.
I know there is a slight noise due to change of the flywheel, this is unavoidable.... but the exhaust note is definitely louder than what we can hear that noise (even with hi-tech I would say), so as for the noise problem = no problem.

Edit:

David, that's a good idea... because I don't think it will take that long to take off those cats while they are doing the flywheel.... just another 6 screws away + unplug lamda sensors. But just afraid that the exhaust note will be very loud after the cats.... still waiting for more feedback on this... and whether or not we need to use S-AFCII to tune our air/fuel to make the mixture a bit richer.

cheers,

richie

NICE! I have the Nismo flywheel & Clutch. The noise is ranged at 1700-2300 RPM. I learned to bare with the noise, but if tighenting some bolts can get rid of it will be great!
Richie, do you mind posting some details on how/where to tighten the bolts to get rid of the noise? Pictured instruction will be wonderful. Thanks!

BTW, if you havent get the UR Crank Pulley, get them. They will make your car feel even lighter/more power WITH the Nismo set up. Lighter is better!

I was going to change the GearBox and Diff oil with some better aftermarket ones and get Peter to install during the service but he talked me out of it.

I cant remember exactly what it was but it was something like, when they changed their gear oil they kept having lots of problems etc so they deceided to try putting in the recommend GL4 oil, which was really hard to find because most oils nowdays are the newer GL5 Synthetic and the only GL4 stuff they could find was some no-name brand oil and once they put that back in they havnt had any problems since.

And now im not going to change the gear and diff oil anymore.

I cannot seem to hear the noise that much because my nismo exhaust is pretty loud.... but I would say it is around 1800 rpm to 2000 rpm or so... somewhere around there.

As for the noise... you can take a look at the very 1st picture that I posted in this thread.... you can see those 4 empty holes around the gear shift console, the screws were pretty loose there. Because on top of the shift console shown in the picture, there is a rubber cover go on top of that, then with a sort of rectangular shape aluminium console ring to go on top of the rubber cover. You will see which bolts (4 bolts) that I am talking about when you first remove the center console piece, because there are only bolts there and the 1st picture shows after you have removed the bolts, aluminium ring and also lift the rubber cover up.

hope that helps!

cheers,

richie

I dont think they're dickey, they should be strong, we wont have the same problems that the US guys have had because ours is the newer revision(thank god).

Have you heard of any of the FI guys having gearbox problems?

I think I have not yet heard any problem caused by the F/I on the gearbox so far though. As far as I know, our gearbox is really strong, even stronger than the one on the GTR, probably that's why the gearbox chattering noise can be so great that nissan needs to use dual mass flywheel to keep it down (just my thought on that)...

cheers,

richie
